I know several of you do, but curious about everyone else. Front end, back end, full stack devs, database admins, data science / ML, UI/UX, DevOps, digital marketing people etc, etc.

What do you do? What languages / frameworks / tech stacks do you work with? What do you want to learn about / get better at in 2019?

Let's nerd the **** out.

I am (currently) Manager of a department called Data Operations.

I really have 3 distinct teams that do Production data loads (ETL) and extracts for 3 distinct products.

Also one of those teams owns our SFTP and 3rd party solution for orchestrating file movement for (technically) 5-7 distinct products.

All of our operations are within the Microsoft stack right now, mostly SQL Server and SSIS.

The team I have in Chicago handles data loading, data normalization, running the data thru an analytics engine, pushing the results to a front end, and a variety of other corner case deliverables that are generally just file outputs from SQL Server, XMLs, text files, MS Access exports, etc.

I say currently, above because my boss left a month ago and I am supposedly being promoted into his Director slot.... I'm doing the work but they have yet to actually complete the process of promoting me.

All of our stuff is Healthcare IT services, so all the data we're loading/extracting is healthcare data in some form.

I'm overseeing a team that is designing the next generation pocket pussy and ******** Betty heads. Key features will be builtin gripping/jerking actions and rechargeable battery. We ran into issues Models V 1.1-1.5. The grip would become too tight and it crushed our synthetic dicks. We've also ran into circuitry issues with synthetic cum that would short out the unit.

Good luck with the promotion. Hopefully they don't try to increase the scope of your responsibilities without compensating you fairly.

I used to work in tech long long ago. Think, before 2000.

So today I am like a lost little rabbit in the tech world.

A random question though. If someone was wanting to get into tech today what would be the best, most lucrative, easiest way to accomplish that?

I am just curios what current tech people think.

that is pretty much the goal of every corporation these days. More responsibility with the same pay.

Yeah. They do. That's why I'm a huge advocate of changing companies every 2-3 years. Personally I think that gives you the best chance to grow your salary quickly. The thing is when they hire a new person they often have no issue paying fair market value for the role. But internal, loyal employees get the shaft often.

I would ask you what you are already good at, and like to do. For example if you have a strong background in math, data science is exploding right now.

I was in high tech sales for 40 years and created some of the largest IT deals in the world.

Now I'm retired and just finished filling nail holes with wood putty

It's hard to get into without a college degree but you can make booku bucks.

People ask me all the time where they should direct their kids and I say:

-Security
-Artificial intelligence
-Big Data

Outside of sales, the tech side of these disciplines are the best way to make a very good living

Or work in a startup. If you already know Python, the libraries available are excellent. E.g. scikit-learn. Just start learning, writing code, networking, publishing some projects on github and maybe contribute to some open source stuff in the space. Check out Kaggle for datasets to play with.

I meant to ask you awhile ago, but the opportunity never presented itself. What were you selling? Hardware for infrastructure? Enterprise software (e.g. ERP)? Both?
