Bass and Shea would be a nice look as a 3 - 4 LB

Chris routinely judges players by big plays and stats and will repeat that as a conclusive statement about a player.

Maybe you need to watch the tape Clyde... because at this point I could rattle off about 20 guys I wanted or backed that went against popular opinion that people said were undersized or too small(tyrann Mathieu) or overweight(alshon Jeffery) or too slow and trouble makers (burfict) lacking experience (Kyle Long)

Before the season even started i rattled off like 20 names of guys who would be considered first round picks and players that I wanted...

Hageman, Gilbert, Murphy are all first round guys that I said would be there before the season started because I actually watched tape on them last year... and even made a post about them in august along with a bunch of other players...

Aaron Donald is fools Gold in my eyes...

Ah yes, when all your other arguments have failed, fall back on the appeal to authority. What's the next logical fallacy in your bag of tricks?

Acts like a Masia about Alshon when he was one of if not the most talented wr to get drafted that year. The whole over weight thing was never going to slow him down in the NFL. Ever. Really a Diamond in the rough there Chris hah

Hageman in the first, Murphy in the second? can he fall that far and would be be scared to have Shea 2.0 and Shea if we are in a 3-4 and Murphy/Shea are our OLB's?

There's talk of Hageman, of Nix of Tuitt, of McCuller's of Donald of Sutton and of course of cutting Peppers.

My question to all of you 3-4/hybrid 4-3 defensive guys is simple, WHO IN THE **** IS GOING TO RUSH THE PASSER? If one of the above players are drafted?

Hageman during the Senior Bowl and during the season would make 1 incredible play and then disappear. In the Senior Bowl he has gone from being unblockable to being dominated by Tyler Larsen.

To inconsistent and too much risk at 14

The LEO in the Seattle hybrid system is not a LB, they do not drop into coverage, and the only profile required is someone who can pass rush.

The LEO can be undersized because of where they line up, but they do not have to be.

Agreed, and what scares me is he seems fit the "Emery honey trap" to a T. Mesmerized by an amazing athlete who happens to be an average/below average football player. The same reason I fear that we'll see Donald racking up double-digit sacks every year in another uniform.

I do not believe in Aaron Donald and this is why...

Aaron Donald is showing elite potential at Senior Bowl practice?! I still don't know that doing it in the senior bowl practices makes you a sure thing as a NFL player... Comparisons to Geno Atkins... LOL... this guy has done well in college but now we are comparing him to the best DT in the game from 2 years ago? dear lord people get a grip on reality...

This guy had 11 sacks... against who? Florida State 1, Duke 1, Virginia 2, Virginia Tech 2, Old Dominion, New Mexico 2, Navy, Georgia Tech 1, Notre Dame, North Carolina 1, Syracuse, Miami, Bowling Green State 1,

I find it funny how one of the only talented guards in the draft was on Notre Dame and Donald didn't even register a tackle in that game...

This is a soft schedule with some really inflated stats... this reminds me of Teddy Bridgewaters schedule? Other than Florida State who on Aaron Donalds schedule was any good? Duke? Miami sucked... Bowling green? Navy?

80% of those teams wont have a guy drafted in the NFL...

First off, Florida State has 2 of the top 10 interior OL in this draft. Secondly, questioning Aaron Donald's size is a legit gripe. Questioning his stats on the field, is just plain stupid. Dude has over 40 TFL over the last 2 years. He was essentially the college version of JJ Watt this year (minus the batted passes). Broke a record for most postseason awards, and deserved every single one of them.

The guys with the most to prove are the ones that seem to be performing the best, Tyler Larsen Zach Martin Aaron Donald...

Other than hometown Jimmy and David Carr both QBs there really aren't guys who can make or break themselves at the senior bowl other than those 3 players...

They have the most to prove so they are going to be giving it their all in order to raise their stock....

Hageman Nix Jernigan, their draft stock is unlikely to change significantly regardless of there performance at a senior bowl practice... the only way their stock changes is if they get injured... which they most likely are protecting themselves from....

you guys can choose to believe what you want... I'll choose reality...

Michael Bennett doesn't fit the profile of a LEO or Elephant linebacker he more or less fits the Israel Idonije role of a pass rusher.

But the two main responses I get in this thread and the way they lay out the roster the Bears are going to stick with a 4-3 scheme rather than anything that resembles 3-4 or some sort of hybrid 3-4 that requires a linebacker to come in and be the primary pass rusher.

What's readily apparent is the way free agency is set up, it's set up best for the Bears to stick with a 4-3 defense and to take their shot at bringing in 4-3 base defensive ends like Greg Hardy, Michael Johnson, or Michael Bennett.

The idea that the Bears can switch to a 3-4 doesn't make sense based on the needs of the defense to run it, the personnel on hand and the free agents and draft picks the Bears would be better off signing.

The best players to target in the draft the way the draft is set up is to grab players that fit into a 4-3 scheme...PERIOD. It's where the depth of the draft lines up, and it's the smartest way to go for the benefit of the franchise.

The Seahawks weren't competitive immediately under Pete Carroll that had to build the personnel up to get the high level of defensive play they wanted. They didn't land Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas in the same draft. They've had to build their team over a couple of years and the Bears are likely going to have to do the same. They can draft Louis Nix, and sign Brian Orakpo, but they're still going to need another starting CB who can excel in press coverage, they're going to need that center fielder at the safety position, they'll still need to find a legit 5-technique DE.

The smarter plan would be to sign one of the best 4-3 DEs, bring back a guy like Wootton, continue to develop guys like Washington and Bass or draft a developmental DE like Kareem Martin. Stack a solid DT rotation by re-signing Collins and Melton and adding to it with a guy like Donald or Sutton or DaQuan Jones. There are depth at certain key positions in free agency and the draft that best work out to the Bears' advantage, none of which include struggling to find the personnel to run a 3-4 defense.

I don't think you understand that not all 3-4 defenses are the same. Not all hybrids are really the same either. Sure, the Bears could run something like the Ravens/Patriots. They would need a big NT/DT. They would need a big 3-4 DE. They would need a pair of OLBs. They'd probably need 2 new ILBs. Or they could run something like the Seahawks. Or like the Packers/Steelers run in the nickel. Still the gap principles that the current D is used to. Still use a 3-technique to shoot the gap between the weak side OG and OT. Still need a NT that shoots the 1-gap.

The biggest difference is the strong side DE lines up over the OT instead of outside shoulder or wide 9. You're not going to get away with an undersized guy here, but a guy like Wootton should be fine here. Michael Bennett played this position for Seattle. Just need a guy that strong at the point of attack and doesn't get killed in the run game. On the other side, instead of a DE, you have a standup guy (LEO) who lines up outside the tackle like the Bears DEs have been doing for years. You can get away with an undersized guy here, as he won't have to worry about a team running heavy on the weakside, unless they pull or motion, which brings the MLB and SS to this side.

Basically, this essentially means the Bears can play the same type of defense, but with a more versatile personnel. They don't have to limit themselves to guys like Kareem Martin or Kony Ealy, who are prototype 4-3 DEs. They can go after those guys (who can also play strong side DE, over the OT), but they can also go after a more athletic guy who can stand up and rush the passer and make plays in space if needed (vs. run or in coverage).

So, for a traditional 2-gap 3-4 D. Yes, the Bears need a NT, at least 1 DE, 2 OLBs, at least 1 ILB. And re-signing guys like Melton and Collins goes out of play. And who knows what happens with Briggs.

For a hybrid defense, the Bears the Bears can bring back most of the same guys if they want (which would be cheaper) and just focus on an edge rusher (or 2) and fix up the back half of the defense. Briggs still plays his traditional WILL position.

I thought Tuitt is a DE? I've heard him being talked about as a DT ?

My obvious answer would be a DE f/a. Getting Wooten back at DE will help in the rotation, but he isn't getting more pressure than ole Peppers. I would love a good sized pass rusher in the draft, not an undersized "bonecrusher".

he isn't undersized at OLB where he'll be playing in our new defensive scheme.. you guys are in the past

Why go to the Senior Bowl if you have nothing to gain?

Hageman can do a lot to his draft stock at the Senior Bowl and as Jeremiah said yesterday he has not hurt his rock, but he has not shown consistency.

Heaven forbid we should want a guy who gives maximum effort on the field?

Keep operating in A reality.

I will say this. Michael Bennett doesn't solve our pass rush problems alone. And any combination of Wooten, Shea, and Bass as the 2nd DE doesn't either. The reason we could get away with Wooten, Bass, or Shea in the past at the other DE spot is because we had an elite Peppers and a stud Melton. So I think we absolutely need 2 DEs that we think will be 8-10 sack guys and Wooten, Shea, and Bass should only enter the equation as the 3rd DE at best.

Furthermore, getting elite DEs in FA is a lot more costly than getting 2 gap DTs. So it is always better to get a DE in the draft over a comparable 2 gap DT from a cost management perspective. So I would not be looking DT unless early unless it is someone I expect to by applying major pressure on the QB as opposed to simply plugging holes in the run game.

Someone who actually fits into the scheme as a rusher. You don't simply take 260 pound defensive ends and say you're linebackers now. There's not a single starting 3-4 linebacker on the roster.

We've got all the backers we need except for a Ted and Briggs could probably play that roll. The issue is overall quality and chops of the personal as opposed to scheme. Better coaching may sort that. Biggest need to change would be a nose. Your 260lb DE to linebacker is exactly what happens in every draft. That said, I don't think we go 3-4 but do incorporate more of it this year.
