To me, this is the closest battle and will be the hardest decision. Who will be the Cubs 5th OF come Apr 1st? Will it be Reed Johnson or Fernando Perez? I say it will be the hardest decsion because both are having miserable springs, but both guys bring different assets to the Cubs.

Reed Johnson brings a veteran presence, an all out player, club house guy and won't have an attitude with not a lot of playing time.

Fernando Perez brings speed, age, will play all out to stay with the club and can bat leadoff.

They both play excellent defense and could be the late inning substitution for Alfonso Soriano. I actually do see that happening.

I would like Fernando Perez to make the team as the 5th OF because he does bring speed and the Cubs are desperate for speed. He can be a pinch runner to maybe steal runs late in games. He reminds me of Joey Gathright, but I think he'll be better because the Gathright signing did not work out at all.

However, I expect Reed Johnson to make the team because he is a veteran and the Cubs know how he is in the club house. As he was once a Cub before.

Hopefully, the Cubs will be able to keep Perez in the minors. In case, Reed Johnson suffers an injury. In recent years he has so Perez will be a nice back-up plan. I believe Perez is out of options and will have to clear waivers, to be sent to the minors. I'm not sure if a team will pick him up but I wouldn't be surprise.

So...who do you think will earn the 5th OF?

Please not Reed.. I know he's a grinder but his best days are behind him.

Being a 5th OF of course his best days are behind him. He would only come in for Defense of reasons or hit against LHP. The reason he valuable to Cubs is the clubhouse.

Reed and Perez have been performing evenly this spring, but Reed has a power edge so far this spring.

I don't buy any of that clubhouse stuff. You have no way of proving it & I don't think the players affect each other that much.

Winning will make the players happy. The better the players, the better the shot they have at winning.

That's how I see it, anyway.

Sun Times says that ReJo and DaBarn are favs for the backup jobs.

Wow..

That's not very appealing.

Johnson has played just as well as Perez, and Quade likes veterans, so it isn't shocking, especially when Perez having minor league options is taken into consideration.

Barney has outplayed the injured Ojeda, so that isn't shocking either.

We should be focusing on the real issue here. Which is why Hill hasn't been released and Castillo given the backup job yet.

The Cubs need speed and that's why I go with Perez. I also want to see what Perez can do, we know what Johnson can do.
