Why Shouldnt Jon Bostic Start?

He should start, IMO just at the SAM instead where he can spend the two downs he's on the field playing to his strengths as a run defender. He's already being pulled on third down in the nickel with Anderson taking over at the MIKE. If Anderson is good enough to handle the MIKE position in the nickel that's where he should play, with Bostic able to play the SAM.

I do think Bostic is a good player/pick, personally I don't think he'll ever be the coverage MIKE required for the Bears defense. Even at Florida Quinn worked around using Bostic in coverage excessively. The Bears need to still draft another LB next year, & IMO the perfect fit is in the 2014 draft being Christian Jones. I know it's way early, but I like watching college prospects year 'round & right my favorite player for what the Bears need, & likely have a realistic shot at drafting is Christian Jones. So far Jones is the perfect prototype coverage LB. Right now I'd love to see the Bears draft him in 2014 more than any other player, & move forward with a LB core of:

WILL: Khaseem Greene, 6'1"/241 - 4.67/40

MIKE: Christian Jones, 6'4"/234 - 4.54/40

SAM: Jon Bostic, 6'1"/245 - 4.59/40

That would be one sweet, & very nice, fast & athletic LB core for the future. Personally, I want a taller, faster athletic LB with length who can blanket TE's & WR's better than Bostic who has straight line speed but isn't the most agile LB I've watched. Bostic was a good pick, but IMO MIKE LB the Bears need wasn't even in the 2013 draft. In 2014 I really don't think that's going to be the case. I think Jones would be a perfect fit to adding the final cog in the starting LB core moving forward. This isn't the cover 2 43 of lovie smith anymore... and as much as I loved our defense... i think we are going to use Bostic as a blitzing linebacker alot more than you think...

Bostic can blitz and has solid speed... just because he isn't the best cover linebacker doesn't mean he is going to be good enough at it to make an impact at the MLB position in coverage...

Christian Jones is likely to be a top 20 pick as long as he has a solid year with his speed and versatility being his main attactions... he would fit solidly into our cover 2... but i don't think we will be playing the Cover 2 exclusively although we will see it very often...


Again... I think Bostic is going to be a star MLB in this league... he just needs some reps...

I doubt Christian Jones would be doing much better in the NFL... Bostic after all has grabbed alot of attention as a rookie already with his pick 6 and his devastating hit...

Every rookie gets beat in coverage...

I'll take you up on that Bostic ending up a star MLB in a pass happy league that demands a MIKE to be able to play coverage. What's the wager? Jones will fit any system, & rush off the edge, not just a base cover 2, & Bears still need to add another LB anyway. Plus Jones only has a high second/low first round grade on him from most at the moment, not a top 20.

I would like to add though its mainly his down field coverage which is pretty weak right now. He is doing a pretty good job of getting to the area he needs to be in the short passing game.

We've been running quite a bit of Cover 3 and Cover 1 since we drafted D.Manning. Under Lovie 3rd and long more often than not was a situation we would run Cover 2 however quite a bit of press coverage has also been sprinkled in. If anyone doesn't believe me watch old games. I'll make this easy. Look at where the safeties line up on 1st and 2nd down. Also, pay attention to our corners and how they play the WRs. We have clearly moved away from the cover 2 quite a bit especially with Urlacher aging and his decreased range.

Another reason he should be a SAM & not a MIKE. He'd very rarely have to cover deep, he'd mostly have to cover HB's out of the backfield & be able to solely focus on run defense & blitzing which IMO are his two strongest assets. He's a plugger LB with top end speed. The kid could end up a decent MIKE some day, but I think he'd end up a stud SAM LB that could be a strong presence in shutting down an opponents running game.

Exactly. Marinelli even used some three man pass rush when McClellin was on the field, & also used the CB's in man coverage more than I'd ever seen under Lovie with a lot of 2 man under. A kid like Jones is a prototype LB that's played all three LB positions at a high level cover, play downhill, & rush off the edge. IMO he'd be a friggin' awesome addition to any system, & I'd love to see him continue the legacy of great Bears LB's. Why people would frown on adding a kid like that because we already have Bostic, yet still need another LB, is beyond me. I think Jones would be great in hybrid or a 4-3 T-2, which I think are the two systems the Bears will end up primarily using over the next few seasons. IMO, in todays pass happy league, a team would be nuts to not want a MIKE that can play well in coverage consistantly.

I definitely want to see the kid after this year. I've heard rumors that FSU may want to rush him off the edge even more. Just imagine having this kid WITH Bostic & Greene. We'd have to have one of the fastest, versital, & most athletic LB cores in the league with those three, if the Bears got him. Right now he's my favorite LB in college ball, if not player. I like Clowney too but that doesn't look as though it's going to happen.

A 3rd round grade might have been considered a reach, in regards to Ansah.

I just think that you aren't giving bostic a chance... its almost as if you see no room for improvement... and think he has maxed out his potential.... he hasn't... he isn't even close to reaching his potential... He literally is just digesting the system this off season...

I am guessing he will look good and bad at times this year...

but overall he has a chance to become a great cover MLB and a dominating run stopper... I really don't think you are giving him a chance...

Florida let him do what he was best at... he still is such a raw player at the NFL level... he has plenty to develop...

I need to know... what do you really expect from Bostic this year?
