"I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaack" as Michael Jordan once said when he came out of retirement prior to the 1994-95 season to give the Bulls an extra push for a playoff spot. That was 17 years ago when 'The Greatest Of All Time' returned to the hardwood courts
Now 17 years later, could those be the words that come out of Kirk Hinrich? Bulls Insider Aggrey Sam of Comcast Sports Net-Chicago recently wrote an article of Captain Kirk potentially being the interim replacement starting Point Guard in place of Derrick Rose.
The article said quote "Help wanted: Veteran point guard, capable of starting, but comfortable coming off the bench when All-Star point guard returns from injury late in season. Must be willing to play for defensive-minded coach, familiarity with Bulls organization and Chicago area is a plus. Salary negotiable, but hometown discounts appreciated! Scouring a list of available free-agent point guards over the next few months will inevitably occur, but one player in particular fits the above description: Kirk Hinrich"
As we all know, he was drafted 7th overall out of Kansas despite being labeled a mid to late first rounder by the Bulls in 2003 after Jay Williams suffered a career ending injury in a motorcycle accident. At that time, the Bulls were just coming out of their rebuilding stage with guys like Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler but they had nothing else until the 2004 offseason when Ben Gordon, Luol Deng and Chris Duhon were acquired on Draft Day.
Many fans questioned about his abilities to be a starter in the NBA and boy did those fans turn into believers after seeing the intense defense, the solid perimeter shooting, leadership of an experience veteran and creating crafty plays which led to him being selected to the All-Rookie 1st Team. In 2007 for his intensity, he was named to the 2nd All-Defensive Team.
While he wasn't the top scoring point guard in the league, his play alone made the Bulls better but when he got more help, the whole team slowly but surely got better and better. After a thumb injury and surgery, Derrick Rose was picked 1st Overall in 2008 which named him to the backup PG spot but minor injuries limited him to 51 games(4 starts) but was effective in an epic 7 game 1st round series with the defending champion Boston Celtics scoring over 12 points per game and playing really strong defense.
2009-10 was the last year for #12 in Bulls red scoring 11 PPG in 33 MPG in 53 starts and losing to Cleveland in 5 in the first round and we thought his Bull days were over.
Oh really? Well not if these injuries have to say something about it. The biggest question is will he be willing to take a paycut from his current $8 Million salary as part of that deal in 2006. If he was given $8 Million for multiple years i'm all for bringing back the Captain in Bull red, white and black.
I can give 5 very good reasons why Gar Forman our General Manager should consider bringing him back to the Chicago Bulls
1-He's a leader. They didn't name him the Team Captain for 4 straight years for nothing! Definitely would help some of the younger players coming in
2-A fan favorite! Sure this may not come in handy but still the people want to win and have someone who is familiar in a fill in role and hes been there before so I say DO IT!
3-Can play both Point and Shooting. We have a few swingmen already in Korver, Brewer and Butler but none of them can play the point and score everywhere and slash anywhere like Kirk can!
4-He has played with the Derrick and Luol. After all, him and Rose were the point guards for 2 seasons and Luol Deng was a starter alongside him from the 2004-05 til the 2009-10 season!
and the best for last
5-DEFENSE! His style and play on defense that he would bring to Coach Thibodeau's schemes would absolutely make the 2010-11 Coach Of The Year smile and happy each and every game!
If those aren't good reasons why Forman should bring him back, then I don't know what will! One thing is for certain, if they do pursue him and he says yes to a paycut? Well fans get your #12 Jerseys at a local sports shop!
