Yeah, but if Urlacher would have played 2 more games, he easily could have had 375 more tackles...

Those total numbers include assists which are notoriously suspect. Urlacher had 41.5 sacks to only 20 for Thomas. Further, Urlacher had a bigger impact in pass coverage as Lovie pretty much tailored his Tampa 2 to cater to Urlacher's skill set in being able to aid the safeties by helping to cover the intermediate to deep middle. With Urlacher, you got the sense his play elevated the entire D in a way I never quite got consistently from Thomas. Thomas was more limited as a player although still a heck of a player and still deserving of the Hall.

HoF is some amount of popularity contest beyond just being a great player, right?

Urlacher is more popular/well-known ?

Not saying that is fair, but could explain why.

1100 solo for Thomas to 1040 solo for Urlacher. (if the graphic someone posted in the thread is accurate, I haven't verified)

In these days of "equal opportunities" and "affirmative actions", the NFL was forced to pick their "token white guy that is not a quarterback" HOF player and they went for the one in the bigger market.

Did you seriously think they would send two white linebackers to the Hall of Fame? Not saying it is right, but let us just be realistic about the world we live in.

Urlacher was a transformative player whose abilities may never be replicated. Urlacher won DPOY honors, did Thomas? Urlacher dominated Michael Vick who himself was a generational talent. When Vick was in his prime, Urlacher dominated him. Urlacher manned one of the best defenses in the NFL in 2005 and 2006. He was the focal point the dude. Thomas was a great player, but he wasn't U rlacher. Add in the singular moment of domination in the 2006 Arizona game and you have a Hall of Fame player in addition to a myriad of other reasons.

I think that Arizona game was HUGE for Urlacher nationally.

And I'm not taking anything away from him. But I'd put Thomas in too.

Probably because football is not only about stats, this isn't baseball. Urlacher did thing Thomas could never do and do not necessarily show up on a stat sheet, most notably cover the "pipe" like a safety or quarterback his defense to adjust to the offense. Also, a few of Url's seasons he didn't finish further hurting his stats if that is your thing.

Irrelevant. They played within 2 games of each other.

Better argument would be Derrick Brooks (HOF) vs Zach who played in exactly the same timeframe. Zachs tackle stats are superior, but Brooks impact plays and SB appearance put him in.

I think Thomas didn't fit the mold.... too slow.... too short. All he did was produce though. But as in many things this is a beauty (popularity) contest and a LB for the Bears sells much better than a LB for the Phins. They both belong IMO.
