Flexibility....have u seen what PHI and BOS have done......CUBS are a big market team. they need to start acting like it. NO REASON they cant spend as much as those 2 teams
They may be a big market team but every team has a limit. The Cubs have so many bad long-term deals that they can't spend much in other areas. You make it sound like the Cubs should have a $200 million payroll just because they're in a big market.
Again with only 130 mil payroll projected they dont need to get rid of salarly. They should be up there with PHI and BOS...Cubs are a BIG MARKET. they need to start acting like it. I would love to get rid of fukudome but keep Z...

i realize he has his up and down but dude still only 29. Went 8-0 last 2 months of season. He has won 10 or more games in every year but 1. I think it would be hard to find another guy to replace him. Yes Garza but wouldnt the team be better if we had Demp,Garza, and Z...i think so
:obama:
You're using W-L as a reputable stat...
Even WHEN he was on a tear at the end of the season, he walked a ton of guys and allowed a lot of hits. His numbers are misleading and he's not worth the money he makes at all. On a playoff team he's their #2-#3 starter, and that's not including his temper tantrums that he always has.

Garza would want a contract extension which is money the Cubs aren't gonna spend on another pitcher. You really have a terrible perception on how a team needs to be run IMHO.

Lets see PHI just got ANOTHER ACE but for Cubs to get another pitcher they have to ditch one? Thats why we havent won in 102 years while PHI in the WS 2 of the last 3 years.:nelson:

OK, if we're going by this big market-big spender outlook, then if Philadelphia is such a big market, why didn't they re-sign Werth? And why are they looking to SHED some payroll to accommodate Cliff Lee's contract? And why did they heavily backload the deal if they have such a high payroll?

Spending =/ Winning
The Phillies have also depleted their farm system.

Farm systems only have potential to truely work for teams like Florida/Tampa/Kansas City/Pittsburgh (small market teams that cannot afford to sign big name free agents) in my opinion.

Those teams must recognize that that's their only true possible way of winning, and the Tampa Bay Rays proved that you can truely accomplish that if you play your cards right.

These days it's too tempting to not unload on your farm system when you have guys like Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Prince Fielder, etc. being thrown at you.

So why do the Yankees want Zambrano? Don't they know there are better pitchers (I'm assuming) available?

Moving Z would be great. If Hendry could get some prospects that the Ray's want and then flip them for Garza it would be a WIN for the Cubs. Cubs would get younger, cheaper and better IMO.

Yankees won't give us many good prospects out of it.

Then what they going to give us? Joba the Hut and Jeter? Of course they will gives us prospects, that is the only thing Hendry should want from that old team. Besides Cano, Hughes and maybe Tex I wouldn't want any other player on that roster.

About the only the Cubs will get of any value is the relief of 18 mil in payroll for this year and the next.....and that is hoping the Yankees pick up all of his remaining contract. The prospects are simply that....if any prospect in these types of deals ever turn out....consider yourself lucky.
