Is this really exotic in the US? Being European, and the vast majority of the cars having a stick shift, this notion of "learning" to drive a stick shift is really alien to me. Any reason for the automatic gears being predominant in America?

Because it's too hard to hold a beer and cell phone while driving stick.

Uptown baby!
Sups, You're confusing me with your Dad again. Now his feelings are going to be hurt... maybe you should return the favor.

Besides, I would never use Scope unless I had to... it's sugary water with alcohol. Listerine all the way.

And yeah, I've been known to curse a lot... although I think over the last few years I've gotten better about it (unless I've been drinking).

Anyway... I was more using it for cheap comedy, no offense intended, Bookie!

Oh, I got that---that's why I was giving you grief in kind! No worries. lol

I was going to suggest aiming higher as well when I saw the OP, I wouldn't say learing stick is bucket list worthy.

Hell, I don't have a right hand and can drive stick.

Here in the US pretty much everything is automatic - there's really no reason to buy a stick car - it's kinda antiquated and unnecessary when you think about it. Plus in America we like to eat and talk on our cell phones so having automatic allows you to do that. However, sports car enthusiasts only drive stick - it's part of the allure. So if I buy a Corvette it will have to be stick - have automatic in a sports car would be embarrassing. And most everyone I know that learns to drive stick here in America is shown how to do it by a friend or family member in some parking lot. It's just one of those things I don't know how to do and therefore want to learn. Although my friends with stick won't let me 'practice' with their cars - something about me ruining the clutch.

Bah! They're just scared, most clutches can last 60K and a day of learning isn't going to decrease that too much. Plus once you figure out how to get out of 1st it's a piece of cake.

If that were true I wouldn't have any hands.....

It was actually from a pro wrestling match in Japan with barbed wire ropes.

Sounds better than it being congenital, most likely from my father being exposed to Agent Orange, doesn't it?

My newest car I just recently purchased is a 07 Nissan Versa.

That being said, I had a choice, Stick or Automatic. Considering that I had never driven a stick shift, I took that one. It took my roughly 3 days to finally learn how to ease off the clutch and how to get the car moving. Once I got past 1st gear, my "manly" instincts picked up the rest and it was smoothing sailing. The next step was learning how to go from a stopped position on a incline to moving without dropping back too much. At first I gave it a ton of gas just so I wouldn't drop back, but now I don't even think about it.

I enjoy driving a stick shift more then the auto as I feel more involved with the driving and I have to pay a bit more attention. Plus, I'm getting about 28-30 miles per gallon.

In that case he's just lucky it was the ARM that fell OFF!!!!

Driving a "stick" is pretty easy although I didn't learn until my wife taught me in College. You want to drive the Camaro, you learn the stick. I learned!

I only have two "bucket" things left. After seeing the STANLEY CUP!

1. Watch my son grow and be able to see him and his family grow.

2. Live the rest of my life happily with my wonderful bride.

1. Go out in a death that will rival David Caradine and Chris Farley

2. Remain child-less and wife-less until number 1 (however getting married can be accepted as long as it is quickly followed by number 1)

3. Be able to afford to play in the 50k H.O.R.S.E. World Series of Poker event.

Cause Touch the Cup has been handled already as well...
