Are we gonna draft some speed? That is a reason I wanted Springer we need to add speed to the organization adding a 280+ guy doesn't help that i hope we get a 5 tool player soon. My friend who was in the draft last year id a 5 tool player he went in the 46th round Caleb Hougesen he is the best ball player ive ever played with he signed with the Giants he went to a small high school but getting players like him is what we need high upside players with 5 tools..

Why do we need speed? Speed is overrated.

That's what I was sayin' earlier in my post.

It's interesting. In high school, some scouts told me that I could be drafted higher by going to college and playing baseball while others said just the opposite. Guess it just depends on how developed and talented each person is.

I think it depends on how much money the player wants and how much the organization is willing to overpay for him.

Re: speed...speed don't matter if you can't even get to first base. But it's nice to have.

 station to station baseball? unless your lineup is filled with dominant sluggers, you need to have some speed in your lineup. Thank god you dont run a baseball team.

Speed is good to have, but I think more important is to have smart baserunners. First-to-third goodness!

speed is necessary in some capacity. the Cubs have that now with Barney, Campana and co. the problem is a lineup that can produce run support.

Well... why do we need it then?

Speed doesnt go in a slump. Speed also translates to both defense and baserunning. Speed puts pressure on the other defense and also the opposing pitchers.

People dont realize that the wind is blowing in at Wrigley more than its blowing out. When you add that to cold weather, speed can better help you win games many times.

Another thing, I don't know if people have noticed but HRs have really gone down since they started testing for drugs. It would make sense to look at how the game was played before the steroid era, namely the 80s. The 80s was a time where speed was a bigger part of the game, and the attitude towards strike outs was different because there werent as many HRs that justified striking out so much.

The Reds have the perfect balance of speed in their lineup if they could pitch they would be really tough to beat. There pitching is truly terrible but they have a great lineup and well built lineup besides that bum Johnny Gomes

That bum Johnny Gomes would look good in our outfield, lmfao...

He's a great bench player, and should never have been platooned to begin with.

You think the Reds have speed?! Hell, do a search on their top middle infield prospect Billy Hamilton, and you'll see just how much speed they're about to get.

He is 50 out of 58 this season for Dayton.

I dont think anyone has the perfect balance...or, at the very least, they dont use it optimally. The stat junkies will tell you that its bad to attempt steals if you arent successful 70% of the time. The problem with that is that this is largely coming from data during the steroid era where there was a different kind of player, which skewed data. I would like to see a team become rededicated to having a fast team that utilizes speed in his fullest form and I would like the Cubs to be that team. Id like the Cubs to start emphasizing small ball at the minor league level so that when they come to the big leagues, bunting isnt a lost art and the Cubs would have a team of ninjas that can run fast, bunt, and play defense.

Lex, check out Billy Hamilton. The Reds will have more speed between their middle infielders in 3 years than any other team in the majors. Stubbs swipes too, as does Bruce.

I just tried youtubing him but there was only one video of him stealing with no throw. Ill take 50/58 any day though. I kind of hope Easterling gives baseball a go I think he runs in the 4.4s or 4.5s.

Speed isn't very useful if the guy can't get on base. I'd rather have a line up of slow guys that get on base than a line up of guys that don't get on base, but are fast.

I can't beleive someone actually is pointing out that its good to get on base. Speed can help you get on base. It also helps your defense. It doesnt just affect stolen bases.
