When hacks like Scott get roster spots over skilled players, it's holding the sport back.

I hear things like this all of the time, is it really of concern to you whether the NHL expands? 30 teams is more than enough, stadiums are packed all around the league and the games are readily available on a national stage almost every night now.

I thoroughly enjoy where the NHL is at right now, and I hear "holding the sport back" a lot, holding the sport back from what exactly?

To me the product on the ice is unequivocally the greatest in the world, and the skilled players blow my mind every night with something new. The game is not being held back at all in my opinion.

Guys like Scott are slowly fazing out. Because Buffalo is terrible, they have to find guys like Scott to fill roster spots. Same thing the Hawks did with David Koci and Reed Low. Most teams "enforcers" play or can play a regular shift such as Thornton, Prust, Bollig, Neil, Crombeen, Carcillo, Dorsett, Englland, Boll, Rinaldo. You also have some skilled guys who play with that edge and will fight when needed such as Mike Richards, Lucic, Bickell, Downie, Stewart, Simmonds, Hartnell, J Thornton, Benn, Doan, Brown etc.

The game is evolving towards a more skilled roster that has rugged players willing to fight. An Enforce 2.0 type player. Look at guys who were drafted in the past few first rounds who are skilled and willing to drop the mitts such as McNeill, Beach, Tom Wilson, Dumba, Tyler Biggs, Gudbranson, McIllrath, Evander Kane, Brayden Schenn, Zack Kassian, Sam Morin, Darnell Nurse, Nikita Zadarov, Ryan Hartman.

The game is changing, just not as fast as some want it too.

This would help my understanding of where you are coming from: did you ever play hockey Variable and what was the highest level?

No team today is terrible enough to have to sign a guy like John Scott. That signing was solely in response to all the stupid bullshit criticism stemming from Lucic bowling over Miller and how the Sabres weren't "tough enough" and that's why they crumbled. I guarantee you they have guys who would be more valuable to them that are on their AHL team (and would be more beneficial to them) to have up in Scott's place. And I don't even have to look to know that. That's how bad he is. As far as I'm concerned, Kaleta and Scott being suspended have made them a better team with their absences.

No, no that's not what I mean. If anything the NHL should probably lose a team or two. I wasn't talking about it in that way. When I say "hold the sport back" it's more cultural than anything. It's the example set to aspiring players by these GMs giving people like John Scott a NHL roster space. It tells them that even if you are a skilled player, that alone doesn't guarantee you a spot over much, much less skilled players. It tells them that one way, or a less skilled way, to get attention from a team is to play on or over the edge if need be. Because players have been getting rewarded for doing that in the past, why wouldn't young players looking eagerly for any opportunity not try that? The cause and effect of that idea, because it's being encouraged from the top of the mountain, from the NHL, goes through all levels of hockey and has the potential to be disastrous, especially for players who really honestly have no chance at all to play at the highest (or higher) level of the game, no matter how they play.

Emery deserves a suspension. I'm all for two guys fighting or going after a guy for being cheap, but Holtby declined the invite and Emery just pounded him for no reason besides getting shelled.

Wilson is starting to become another lucic in regards to the skill and snarl.

I think the fans walked out of the game because of all of the violence... did you not see all those empty seats at the end?

BTW Why is Varlamov starting in goal tonight for the Avs?

Seriously... Roy... the Avs and the NHL thought that was a good idea?

Personally, I find it disgusting.
