I think with possessions off faceoffs being as important as ever, you are going to see the press lean more heavily on centers who also have a high FO%. No knock on Hossa, but with a 1 goal lead late in the game and an ensuing faceoff in the D zone, I want to see Toews out there before Hossa.

You'd ideally want to see both late in the game. Toews is stellar at FO's but he's not Yannik Perrault in faceoffs. If Toews loses the draw, Hossa *far* more likley to force a turnover than Toews, Further, if the 'hawks have possession Hoss is far less likley to cough up the puck.

Let's go to the Mapâ„¢:

Hoss was 5 in the league in takeaways for the regular season with 75--behind Thornton, Hall (both 76), Eric Staal (77), and O'reilly (83). Of all of those top 5 in the regular season, only Hossa and Ryan O'reilly have more than 1 takeaway per game average, and Hossa's is slightly higher (1.04167 compared to 1.0375). Toews on the other hand, is 37th on the Takeaway chart with 51, and averaged 0.67105 takeaways per game.

Of those 6 players: Hall had the most Giveaways with 100, Followed by Thornton (96), Staal (61), RoR (33), Toews (30), and Hossa (26). Only Toews, RoR, and Hossa have a net positive Takeaway to Giveaway ratio, and Hoss's 2.88:1 ratio is better than RoR's 2.52:1 and Toews' 1.71.

In the playoffs, Hoss was 2nd in Takeaways (18) only to Ryan McDonough 20), and played in less games. For comparison the next best 'hawks was Saad (13) at 10th overall and Toews and Sharp were 50th and 51st, tied with 7. McDonough, however, had 35 Giveaways, while Saad and Sharp had 6, Toews had 8, and Hoss had only 5.

What is the point of my meaningless, half-baked babbling? You might want Toews to take the draw, but you want Hossa out there to steal the puck and protect the puck. The press being what they are may indeed vote otherwise, but when it comes to the best defensive forward, I think Hossa was hands-down the best defensive forward last year and I think anyone would be hard-pressed to prove otherwise.
