HC: Jim Bob Cooter
OC: Mike Groh
DC: Fangio

Teryl Austin (DC of Lions) and Jim Bob Cooter seems to have a good friendship. I would like to keep them together but which one gets the head coaching gig? Jim Bob may want and need to prove his success isn't just Stafford.

HC: Teryl Austin
OC: Jim Bob Cooter
DC: Assistant Coach Austin wants to promote.

You couldn't have both, doesn't work that way. Lions can block a lateral move

Why would either leave a better team for the same job?

Jim Bob Cooter is very green and young at 33 years old it's rare that a Sean McVay gets a head coaching gig at that age.

If he comes to Chicago or another team and proves his success is his doing and not because of Matthew Stafford or the current head coach then he is a prime HC candidate.

Dowell Loggains wanted to start Jordan Howard over Jeremy Langford his rookie season it wasn't until Langford went down until Howard went in.

Howard was injured himself somewhat and couldnt play week 1. But yes, Langford going down jumpstarted his career.

Bears are more likely to go after Teryl Austin than Jim Bob Cooter. It's rare for a coach in his thirties to get a head coaching gig. Is his success because of Offensive Mind Jim Caldwell who has won 2 Superbowls? or Matthew Stafford?

Fox may be holding Loggains back and not trusting his decisions.

Telling him to start Langford over Jordan Howard
Not trusting him to throw more than 10 yard passes

I'd love to see Dowell Loggains unchained by Fox.

I am fine with Loggains atm. If a change had to happen then based on the OP's choices I'd go with Van Pelt.

Keep in mind the Bears have a rookie QB and JBC has a track record with helping QB's, so I am not sure your seeing the bigger picture here. As to which of the two would make a better HC, I can't say for sure, but I can tell you who is the better choice for the Bears in this moment.

What track record? The one year as a QB Coach with the Lions? The Lions head coach Jim Caldwell has been working with QB and Offenses since the late 70's. Jim Bob Cooter may need to distance himself to prove his success is his own doing.

As coach:

Tennessee (2007–2008)
Graduate assistant

Indianapolis Colts (2009–2011)
Offensive assistant

Kansas City Chiefs (2012)
Quality control coordinator

Denver Broncos (2013)
Offensive assistant

Detroit Lions (2014–2015)
Quarterbacks coach

Detroit Lions (2015–present)
Offensive coordinator

I'm not sure what your saying here, are you implying that Caldwell is responsible for Staffords improvement and not JBC?

Yes. Sorta I'm saying there are questions that need to be answered before he becomes a head coach. Bad hiring and decision making has put us in this mess.

Matthew Stafford is only a few years younger than Jim Bob Cooter. I think both of them are just starting to get comfortable in there job and understand it.

The Caldwell - Stafford link fails to account for the fact that Caldwell first hired Joe Lombardi as his OC. It wasn't until Lombardi got fired that Stafford showed improvement, so this at least correlates more closely to the fact that it is Cooter, and not Caldwell, who is largely responsible for Staffords development.

Cooter also has a ringing endorsement of Peyton Manning. I get where your coming from on the age issue. but, if the Bears don't snag him, chances are someone else will.

I posted this before, but if you missed it, give it a read.

Manning still praises John Fox and attends John Fox's practice. Honestly an endorsement from Peyton Manning isn't worth diddly he's just a positive guy.

Is it possible Caldwell is mentoring a young Jim Bob Cooter for a future Head Coaching job and giving him praise when he's doing most the work? Yes. I have no idea if Lions had injuries that caused issues that year, Stafford was stressed or new talent came in or was improved that helped the Lions.

I like Jim Bob Cooter and I'd prefer him to John Fox but we need to understand the red flags that come with him.

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Harbaugh yet. He's probably close enough to outstaying his welcome at Michigan.

I think a guy like David Shaw of Stanford would be an excellent option. I don't see leaving the college ranks but he has a great track record developing young players.

Jim Harbaugh is happy at Michigan but he just had his 7th kid so if Chicago is willing to give him a monster contract that he can't deny he might budge.

Both of those team are filled with talent that the Bears don't have. Rebuilding is a tough process I'd rather bring in a young coach so we don't have to learn a new system when we bring in a new coach.

If our older coaches leaves to retire, illness, or flat out sucks we aren't left with a big mess.

Yeah it's probably best to bring in a young guy but i don't think i'd be mad if we did get Arians. I'm still on the J.McDaniels, Jim Bob Cooter train.

What about Frank Reich?? He's done a good job in Philly and with C.Wentz.
