The Knicks gave up 5 first rounders for Mikal Bridges. The Lakers gave up one that is four years from now.

Shits rigged. Lebron must have told Silver that he's retiring.
Would this be your comment in 1975 too?

I was born in 1982.

So you'll have to help me out.
You can know of history prior to your birth.

Regardless the trade for Kareem is also viewed as lopsided.

Though Lakers did trade Milwaukee two top 10 draftees from the 75 draft that just didn't pan out.

Regardless. I don't view this as rigged.

The Mavs GM has already said he only talked to one team. Compare the following:

Maybe "rigged" is the wrong choice of words, but I don't know how anyone can look at this trade and not think there's a lot more going on here than Luka's weight and signing him to the supermax.

Marc Stein:
Both GMs, as detailed in the story, have a close relationship from their years working together when Harrison was at Nike and Pelinka served as Kobe Bryant's agent.

For most of the ensuing weeks trade talks stayed between them and the respective team owners Patrick Dumont and Jeanie Buss.

That's a word for this that eludes me right now.

Not quite as bad as former Laker player/coach/GM Jerry West trading Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown.

They offered it!
lol in the heat of the moment, I hadn't actually read that detail yet. As has been mentioned already, that aspect of it just makes it seem more sus to me.

Lakers always find a way to stay relevant, so much for the post Lebron drought you were hoping for

Yeah, we even have Laker fans all over Reddit saying that, while they're happy, they feel like this deal seemed fishy.

Nico was either dead set on wanting AD and Palinka saw that and took advantage oh him and the situation... or there was something weird in the background that we may never know about.

That deal was also absurd. Basically gifted the Lakers 2 titles. Kobe was on his way out because they Lakers were crashing and burning after Shaq left, and that trade basically saved them.

Then they get LeBron and still struggle mightily.. just to get AD and win a title.

It just always seems to happen for the Lakers.

Even considering all those concerns the Mavs may have with him (which are pretty overblown for a 25yo 5x 1st Team All-NBAer who just took his team to the finals, and had already been to the western conference finals before that), it was still complete franchise malpractice to not at least shop him for a better deal.

The 'conspiracies' that the league wants a star in LA post-LeBron and that the Mavs owners are trying to move the team to Las Vegas make more sense than whatever the GM is trying to sell us, because they just straight up nuked their franchise—the front office comes off as incompetent, fans are pissed off and no player will want to go there after they intentionally just screwed one of the top 5 players in the world out of a super max deal.

I completely agree. There's no doubt the Mavs would have gotten a better deal if teams knew they were shopping Doncic. The fact that there were only secret conversations between the Mavs and Lakers brass makes you wonder what the hell the Mavs were thinking.

Philly does some weird pick trading with the Wizards, and also swaps Reggie Jackson for Bulls killer Jared Butler

Bunch of other trades that didn't get highlighted

Cavs send Caris Levert, 3 2nds, and 2 pick swaps to the Hawks for Deandre Hunter
Heat trade the just recently acquired PJ Tucker, a 2nd, and cash to the Raptors for Davion Mitchell
OKC buys Daniel Theis and a 2031 2nd from the Pels

It's all here: NBA trade tracker: Details for all deals for 2024-25

So much for a quiet trade deadline this year. This is probably the craziest one I've ever seen haha
