Final preseason thoughts:
-Lonzo looks really good for a guy who hasn't played in 2 years. Team plays better with him on the floor and he himself played pretty well
-Giddey looks a bit like a tank commander, but maybe he just doesn't care about preseason after having played Olympic ball and then having an injury. Dude has pretty minimal interest in playing any sort of defense, not that that's anything new for this team, but it's been pretty clear to me he has no interest in that end of the floor. Offensively, he can pass pretty well and that's about all I've seen out of him in preseason. Maybe his slashing game will look better in the regular season, but I didn't see it in preseason.
-Ayo looks really good. Based on preseason play alone, he should be starting over Giddey. He won't because Giddey absolutely is starting the whole season as a mandate I'm sure. He plays his heart out for his hometown team and you just have to respect that.
-Pat was a mixed bag, two crap games and then two decent ones. He does seem to have at least a somewhat more aggressive mindset offensively, but the execution isn't always there. I think he'll be the most frustrating player this year besides Giddey to watch, if their play is similar to what preseason was.
-Jalen Smith doesn't look that great to me when I watch him play but then I look at the box score and he's putting up numbers. He's a guy who can make some athletic plays like blocks and finish lobs and the like, so can't complain much. Wish his shooting outside the paint was a bit better, but it's not like he's known as a sharpshooter. I feel like he's not replicating that 42% from 3 from last year.
-Julian Phillips needs minutes in this rotation. He's kind of an anti-Dalen Terry in that he is pretty limited to 3s, dunks, and some decent defense to me. But, I think that's all the team really needs from him. His corner 3 seemed automatic...maybe he'll surprise us with some 37-40% 3pt shooting this year if he gets a chance.
-I have no idea what the team saw in Liddell that they chose him over Lofton, but local guy wins out I guess. He is a bit quicker and probably more nimble defensively. Fairly inconsequential overall since he'll never see the court.
-Someone please teach Dalen Terry how to shoot. Even just 33-34% from 3 would change everything for him.
-This team is gonna probably give up 50 corner 3s or wide open 3s a game, but at least they'll now shoot 50 3s of their own to try to keep up with the math. No more Derozan isos, it's all ball movement now on offense. Don't be surprised to see them pass up pretty open layups to try to kick out for corner 3s. So far I think that play style has served them well...even with their terrible defense they're able to at least give an appearance of being in the game. The cold stretches will be rough, but so far the supposed promise to play faster and shoot more 3s seems to not be a lie for this season. If so, they will actually be watchable.
