I don’t know if he was an option, but I think they should have traded Shaw to the Astros instead of Cam Smith. I see Smith being the better of the 2.
Different kind of players IMO. Shaw is a better pure hitter IMO and Smith has more power. Shaw also has sneaky good wheels stealing 30 bases last season. He's probably a 20-25/30 guy in his prime. Smith looks more like a 30-35 homer type. There's also differing questions on their defense at 3B though obviously Smith is currently a RF for houston. Shaw has the chops to play 3B but his arm is a bit weak. Smith has a strong arm but might grow out of the position.

Re: cubs DFA-ing Workman... I get it but I do hope either detroit doesn't pay to have him returned as a rule 5 pick or detroit and the cubs can come together on a minor trade to keep him. I still think he can be a useful guy he just obviously isn't ready yet which is why he was available in the rule 5 to begin with. Especially when you consider the cubs are probably going to part with pieces in july. Being able to keep him around would be nice.

I.am to the point of not caring. Make the plays and get the time or let it go under bounce off the mitt and take a hike.

Thank God for charity case removal services

Happ has to be the most underappreciated Cub ever....

Lead off with a carrer .346 OBA and 18.6 fWAR

Most teams would be happy with that. Not Cub fans...

🙄
He's good. Not great. And that's what most would say.

Nice OBA, but no speed, so as a leadoff it doesn't play as well as you'd like. (He got thrown out on a fly ball Tuesday even though the LF double clutched.)

He finished last year with 86 RBI while leading off and that's pretty good. And he has played well defensively even if he often doesn't look the part. He gets it done.

122, 120, 122 wRC+ the last 3 seasons with 3 GG NOW I feel that GG is a crap award but he makes the plays. He is not PCA but no one is

I do agree that he is good and not great. But he is paid 3/61M or 20M per. Which is good but not great money.

So he is adding the right value for his contract. This is a Jed issue not a Ian issue.

We could be talking Heyward here and I get it. Paying 29M for 1 fWAR of D.

Looking over his numbers

103 ISO. He was at 188. BA .271 before .245. SLG down.

To be honest I think he's changed his style to contact because he's got Tucker behind of him and he wants to be on base.

I take that as a team player not a personal glory player. He's doing what it takes to win games and thank God for that

Lost the first three against the Dodgers and won the season series 4-3.

16-10 overall against tough competition and after starting 0-2 in Japan.

They scored a ton in this series but didn't play mistake free ball and were good enough to beat the best.

Fun team.

Ya. I really hate counting those two games. The team was still in training mode. Even then it should have been a split

Interesting that Hodge got the 9th. Really thinking that Hodges high leverage versus Presley being a low leverage closer.

This team. I was excited before the season. Tucker trade and I was like ****, they got something. The small signing I was like this. club. People hating on Trey guarantee he will have a big moment for us. But, now is nut or shut up for the Cubs PCA which is already challenging an MVP in this early season or Tucker who is driving the whole bus. People want PCA moved up. I love the lineup. Swanson won't be great but he will come around to respectable with power. The Cubs 6-9 is just a mixture of speed and power that rotates to the fronton the order. Best part, Nico and PCA may not walk much but they see a ton of pitches.

I'm not surprised the cubs are this good. What surprises me is that it's been mostly because their bats have been so good. People often underestimate the value of defense. You look at the cards when they were on their long run or more recently Milwaukee and the thing they have in common is they built strong defensively. That's the reason the cards of yore could sprinkle magic dust on any random starter and he had a career year and I guess you can say the same about MIL's pitching.

As that pertains to the cubs, we're kind of seeing it with guys like Boyd and Rea having strong starts. But this is why I wanted the cubs to go hard after LIndor ages ago and it's why i love them getting PCA even before he broke out. It's also why I don't really want them to trade Alcantara.

Wanted to dig into some stats this morning on PCA. Was trying to mentally anchor where I thought he was based on his start to the season vs previous CF from history. Long story short he's a really difficult comp. Not many people have his skill defensively and the ones who do often didn't hit. But just as a guiding light here.... since July 1 last season he has 377 PAs where he has hit 14 homers and stole 22 bases while hitting .270/.318/.474 for a 119 wRC+. Obviously he's taking a big step forward thus far this season hitting .294/.339/.549 for a 146 wRC+ but i wanted to throw a bit more meat on the sample size.

To cut to the chase, he's playing a lot like prime Andruw Jones. 21-29 Jones hit .270/.347/.513. PCA probably steals more bases and thus far doesn't have quite the eye Jones did but I think people are gonna walk him more now that his power is breaking out some. He also looks like he's as good as prime Granderson and/or Cameron. For Cameron I think there's more bat there and defense for PCA. Granderson didn't have a lengthy peak but 2007 and 2011 look like reasonable comps to me.

But outside of those you have to start moving into some pretty crazy comps. Like I am not about to throw him in with Mays/Griffey Jr. but that's the kind of next tier you're talking about.
