Lol at thinking we pass on Ward there, lol.

Looks like OP took about 7 hours on NFL.com and looked for the best numbers he could that wouldn't be chosen by X position.

Not exactly football smarts.....

Ward could very easily be the pick, but that would leave the Bears scrambling at OLB with razor thing depth and not a lot of options on day 2 of the draft.

Most of the picks are based on trends we have seen with guys making decisions.

-OT to OG conversions [Saints-Chiefs]
-Athletic upside being highly valued in the 1st round [Pace]
-Length on the edge [Pace and Fangio]
-Explosive numbers at WR with a high YPC [Chiefs]
-ILB is just a personal draft favorite of mine
-Ability to catch at RB [Chiefs]

There are several players the Bears can choose and I think feel comfortable with.

Davenport, Ward, Nelson, Smith, Fitzpatrick, James....Several will be there at 8 although the Bears biggest need will be pass rusher.

this is based off a tweet by La Canfora saying the Patriots are going to trade up for a QB.......

I'm aware it's crap. Just thought it was interesting is all.

I love Ade Aruna but not a fan of this mock. Davenport never managed more than 8 sacks playing against Division 2 guys, he’s just too risky of a pick.

I see no reason to take him over Harold Landry.

I think they analyzed what he did at the senior bowl and most people recognize he has top level potential.

Keval Patel‏ @keval81 Why do most mock draft experts seem to be so much higher on Landry than Davenport? Davenport was bigger, faster, and stronger at the combine. Has bend + violent hands. Landry looks like he has one move: bend. Not like BC plays powerhouse programs either.

ANSW: First of all, how dare you insult the University of Virginia? (Insulting Duke and North Carolina is fine and, in fact, is encouraged.) Second, the term "mock-draft expert" is a bit of an oxymoron. Sort of like "YouTube star." Third, I agree with you. Harold Landry definitely has the superior public relations staff of the two. The few NFL experts I've talked to on the matter all like Marcus Davenport because he is more physical with a bigger upside. In fact, some of the evaluators I've spoken with have Arden Key rated ahead of Landry. When the Path to the Draft crew picked the 49ers' first three selections on Monday, they had Davenport going at No. 9. (49ers Webzone transcribed the segment). The 49ers, of course, worked out Davenport at his pro day. They only sent a regional scout to Landry's pro day. Does that prove they like one and not the other? Absolutely not. It may be they have more questions about one vs. the other. There are plenty of things we don't know about all these guys – off-field issues, etc. – and it will be interesting to see how the pass rushers play out on April 26 and 27

Was Landry at the senior bowl too for an apples to apples comparison?

Davenport is the bigger guy but he’s also more raw and less productive against weaker competition. Landry had 16 sacks as a junior and despite some injuries he still was productive in the games he played his senior season.

I can certainly see a higher ceiling for Davenport but the bust factor for a team that cant afford another bust makes Landry a no brainer between the two.

The reason why Davenport producing during senior bowl, week is a big deal is because of those questions about his level of competition and raw play. During that week, he proved he could take to learning NFL concepts, and he excelled against what was top level college competition.

I did not watch 2016 Landry, but his 2017 film was not overly impressive to me. He has 1 or 2 plays a game where he times the snap perfectly and is able to dip under the OT untouched. The rest of the game he is invisible and a complete nonfactor. When he can’t time the snap perfectly, he just runs straight into the OT and that’s the end of that, because he has no pass rush moves. He is manhandled in the run game and he can’t set an edge. He frequently gets sucked in and ball carriers are able to break to the outside. I see him as nothing more than a situational pass rush specialist, but only judging from his 2017 film.
