True. It is an important piece of information though. To really know what to expect, you would want to know the grain bill, mash temp, hop variety and schedule, yeast strain, etc... Its this whole IPA craze that (hopefully it will blow over soon. I think sours are next) started the intense reporting of the IBU.
As an average beer fan who doesn't know too much about all that stuff the way I do it is by reviews. I usually just check out 3 or so reviews on beer advocate to get an idea of a beer before I buy it.

I've had 60-70 IBU beers that are very hoppy and bitter (like one of my favs Lagunitas Sucks) and other IPAs and stouts with higher IBUs yet less hop presence.

I hate it.

Try some Uintas Hop Nosh or some Sierra Nevada Torpedo

Fun fact: a classmate from high school (but not my bro) helped found Ska Brewing
while Hop Nosh is good and Torpedo is decent, I'd never recommend them to a beginner. Giving an IPA to a beer novice will just make them hate IPAs and turn them off to trying beers. I started with stuff like Sam Adams, 312, Magic Hat then worked up to stouts and pale ales. After you enjoy strong flavorful beers like that, especially if you like pale ales, then I'd start trying some IPAs.
Haven't had the Hop Devil yet, but I'm not a huge IPA/Hop guy. Hate that "dry" finish. I'll look into the Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager. Haven't had anything from SN in years.

Just looked up the Hop Devil as I was typing this..only 50 IBU's..that's not bad. My IBU limit is typically somewhere around 60-70 before I need the IPA/Hops to have a good citrus in the background to help smooth out the finish.
Hop Devil is solid. Pretty balanced for an IPA (still bitter, though). Fairly dark malt for an IPA and is a bit spicy in a way, almost rye-ish maybe.

I like their Dirt Wolf better, personally.

As far as widely available beers that are good intros into beer with flavor, I'd recommend Sam Adams Boston Lager and their seasonals (Summer Ale is out now and is good for a novice).

For sure. I like to know the IBUs more for the science side of it. I dont have the chemicals or tools to do spectrophotometric analysis of my homebrews so I just have to go off calculations which can be off due to poor hop utilization due to several variables. I wonder how many breweries actually do the testing instead of just calculating. I am going to have to start asking that!

IBU doesn't really mean much. I've had bitter 50 IBU beers and 80 IBU beers where the malt stood out. It's really a bad way to market the hoppiness of a beer.

Agree completely about IBU's. I just use them as a general guideline. Obvious exceptions either way.

I'll look into Dirt Wolf.

Its a very hoppy DIPA. Probably not your cup of tea. Citrus/tropical fruit hop flavor, which is what I like.

Its sold in a four pack and I've only seen it a couple times. Could be limited release, maybe. It has a 95 rating on Beer Advocate.

Sours and saisons are definitely next.

Good suggestions. I like Victory's Hop Devil. Their Golden Monkey is ok too if you like tripels...but I would say just "ok". Nowhere near La Fin Du Monde as an example. But this is probably not shit fisch should be testing out :)

To add a serious comment to this thread, Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager. Pretty subtle, but it might still be too much for you fisch.

Got a six pack of Victory's Hop Devil last night...I really like that one a lot, an easy finish for a hoppy beer. Plan on keeping an eye out for more of their stuff.

I will be slightly sad the day when my beloved quads become the next it style. I had the Revolution Quad they did for their fourth anniversary not long ago and it was shit.

Hmmm...starter beer...

I like the Alaskan Amber on tap when I'm gigging...never tried it out of the bottle though.

But it's....as smooth as a mountain stream??

Wheat beers are usually pretty easy on the palate and a good gateway beer to more complex stuff. I'll use this as a chance to toot by favorite beer horn. Go to a big liquor store and look for Weihenstephaner Heffeweissbier. It's a German (no way!) unfiltered wheat beer. Get the larger pint bottles, those are the good ones. You'll have to swirl it around to unlock all of the good shit that's settled in the bottom of the bottle.

I think the majority of wheat beers taste like shit, either that or I've never had a good one.
