It's still early in the preseason but on a slow day why not take a stab at guessing who are the keepers...

One thing I quickly noticed is this team is paper thin at DT after Billings, and OT after D. Wright unless Kiran's thigh finally heals. Plus the LB's aren't exactly reliable beyond Sanborn...

Looks like lots of season ending injuries coming up soon to some fringe players.:(

Too bad there isn't some kind of squad that practices with the team they could stay healthy enough to make.;)

Want Baskerville to make it and I would tune in for for the first time in forever to NFL Prime time just to hear a Chris Berman Hounds of the Baskerville reference.

A SNL Bill Murray reference would be coming as well

Think Ogbongbemiga makes it as a ST LB over Baskerville.

Need a long snapper, so one less position player.

Won't keep 11 OL, several will be on PS along with everyone you have listed on IR. Kiran will be on IR. Carter will probably be on the 53, Murray, Kurhan, and Carvin on PS.

Omen will make the team at LB, core ST player. Probably same with Homer. Blassingame too. I think Sewell will be on IR maybe.

Need a punt returner so one more WR will make it most likely. Probably only 6 CB.

I don't see the need for three QB's. Rather them keep an extra lineman.

If Wheeler plays like he did against the Bills, he should be on the 53. Let's see how he does a a kick returner too.

Yeah, I would be surprised to see them keep 3 QB's on the 53 man roster. I think will they will have 2 on the 53 and then 1 on the practice squad that can be called up.

They aren't keeping 3 qb on the 53 nor 11 OL

And all the guys you have on IR; actually have to be injured to be on IR (and then their season is wasted)

Sewell is probably done here, as is Robinson.
What's funny is there were a lot of people who said Sewell would easily unseat Sanborn after Sewell was drafted last year. Even with Sanborn hurt for much of the preseason, Sewell failed to show anything. I too would not be surprised if he is cut.

Yea..I remember that nonsense about Sanborn losing his job...I purposely stayed out of that conversation. I mean what were people watching?

Sanborn is the new Hillenmeyer. Too smart and trusted to cut. Not flashy enough for anyone else to be interested.

He will stick as a long term back-up you always count on but lacks starter speed.

Have a feeling he will be important every December and January.

No way do they keep Davis on the bench to start the season, he's not the only guy that has been missing time (Gordon, Sweat, etc) unless someone else is added he's still the best right guard option.

The weakness of the team is oline with multiple guys that never stay healthy. I don't believe they are only keeping 8 or 9 on the roster just to keep extra DBs, WRs or LBs.

I believe 9 is pretty much the norm across the league for OL on the 53. I think most only have 8 active for game days. Bates is a better option at G if Shelton can hold down C.

If Davis misses this week (which looks likely) I can easily see him starting the season as the backup RG.....pretty sure they're getting close to being done with him.

Also....most teams keep 9 OL on the 53....you have the bears keeping 11....nobody keeps 11 OL.....the depth pieces (10-12) will be on the PS

I agree about 9 being normal which is what they had last season. They also kept a FB which doesn't seem to be needed in this offense. I'm thinking 10 OL (I miscounted the long snapper so added extra OL) and no FB.

They kept 6 WR last season and now that Velus is a RB I think he will split time at both positions. Travis Homer has been injured more than Davis and has very little value, I don't see him lasting.

As for Davis, if it's just a soft tissue injury he's starting. They aren't paying him $10M this year to be the backup regardless if they are tired of him avoiding practice.

I think the worst thing you can do is start a guy based purely on pay or cap hit and not on talent/production. The Davis contract is a sunk cost at this point. If someone else is healthy and playing better, then you play that guy and not Davis just due to his contract.

Now, if Davis suddenly gets motivated, healthy and is playing better than yeah, maybe he can still be that starter they hoped he would be. But, that's a lot of things that have to change for that to happen.
