Future of Carolina's blue line (update)

12:09PM ET

UPDATE: According to CBC.ca's Elliotte Friedman, Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford promised Tim Gleason and his agent that the defenseman wouldn't be moved before his no-trade clause kicks in July 1.

Calling recent trade rumors "a nightmare" (Hockey Night In Canada Radio), Gleason clearly decided to opt for peace of mind over the potential to earn more money on the summer market.

Over the last few weeks, speculation has been growing over potential trades involving defenseman Tim Gleason. It made sense -- after all, he was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and the Carolina Hurricanes appear much closer to being sellers at the trade deadline than buyers.

Gleason routinely leads Carolina's defense corps in hits, chews up minutes and has a plus-2 rating for a team where a positive in that category is a rarity right now. Plus, he's a former All-Star. Solid, dependable defensemen like that are hard to find, which is why his name kept coming up in rumors. It's also why the 'Canes wanted to keep him -- and they did just that today, signing him to a four-year extension that will pay him roughly $4 million per season. Whether Kirk Muller's squad can make a remarkable run and somehow crack the postseason this year or not, they'll have a blue line of Gleason, Joni Pitkanen and rookie Justin Faulk to build around for awhile.

Price is right for Gleason
"... I spoke with a GM who said teams out of the playoff hunt are finding that it may be better to sign their unrestricted free agents rather than trade them for picks, because it's so competitive on July 1 to bring in comparable players. That's certainly the case for Gleason. It would have been tough for the Carolina Hurricanes to attract a high-end veteran defenseman in free agency for $16 million, so it made more sense to keep Gleason rather than deal him. Even if there were a number of teams lining up to make a deal ..."

Some interesting other nuggets of information in there about the Devils.

Latest on Parise/Devils

10:40AM ET

Zach Parise | Devils

UPDATE: Lou Lamoriello doesn't appear interested in dealing Zach Parise ahead of this season's trade deadline.

According to Mark Everson of the New York Post, sources say the general manager of the New Jersey Devils is relaying that message to other interested GMs around the league.

If Lamoriello isn't able or willing to re-sign Parise before he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, he could trade the winger's rights before July 1.

Commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy Bill Daly recently admitted the NHL is helping the Devils financially by advancing their share of income from areas such as TV revenue.

Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger recently suggested the odds of Parise staying with the Devils beyond this season are "50-50".

As much as Zach Parise and the New Jersey Devils would like to renew their relationship with a fresh long-term contract, the talented right-winger may end up as trade bait for financial reasons.

As reported by the New York Post, the NHL is allegedly ready to lend the money-bleeding Devils cash to cover their operating costs for the rest of the season. This would appear to put a serious damper on the hopes of re-signing Parise for a number comparable to what he could demand as an unrestricted free agent this summer. We're talking between $7.5 and $8.5 million per season. There's no way the Devils would be able to cover such a salary if they're no longer able to spend to the salary cap. And that's how Parise could become the most sought-after trade deadline "rental" of 2011-12, with Devils GM Lou Lamoriello expected to want draft picks in return.

However, the Devils could still choose to gamble, and hold on to Parise in hopes of enjoying an elongated run in the postseason. Playoff success would go a long way in alleviating the financial burden. However you look at it, some tough decisions lie ahead for Lamoriello's club.

Buzz on Thomas leaving Boston

8:44AM ET

Tim Thomas | Bruins

UPDATE: His tenure with the Boston Bruins may not extend beyond this season, but you can probably bank on goalie Tim Thomas finishing up the 2011-12 campaign with the big 'B' on his chest.

"Not trading him," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in an email to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun. "I have not talked to anyone and I don't plan to."

There you have it.

Did anyone seriously think Thomas would be traded? Come on.
