Ray Emery certainly had a night to forget in the Blackhawks 4-3 shoot out win. Despite going 10-0-2 at home this season, Emery gave up 3 goals on 6 shots in the 1st period after the Hawks pelted Jaroslav Halak with 13, only getting one past him. Before the game, he was asked about his home success, and perhaps cursed himself.
“Each night’s a new night,” Emery said. “And as soon as you start looking at that stuff, that’s when you slip up.”
With a .500 save percentage in the opening frame, Joel Quenneville opted to start Corey Crawford in the 2nd period and never looked back. Crawford turned aside every shot (18-18, 3-3) to vault the Blackhawks to a 4-3 shoot-out victory.
Andrew Brunette kicked off the scoring for the Blackhawks on an incredible play from Marian Hossa. It must have been windy in the United Center because the veteran caught a burst of speed that allowed him enough open space to shake all defenders, break one-on-one with Jaroslav Halak and tuck the puck above Halak's glove and into the top corner.
The Hawks dominated possession from puck drop, and that continued throughout the entire game despite the 3-1 comeback.
Jamal Mayers dropped the mitts with B.J. Crombeen, and later Brandon Bollig sticking up for Mayers off a vicious check from Ryan Reaves for round two. Bollig ended up with a 17-minute rest after a hard fought battle, although Reaves did not receive a penalty on the hit initial hit.
In the 2nd period, Johnny Oduya did a marvelous job keeping the puck in the zone to allow Marcus Kruger to fire the puck on net, Viktor Stalberg deflected the puck off his shin and into the net for his first goal in 13 games, cutting the Blues lead 3-2.
Perhaps the power-play did not produce at a great percentage, but it certainly came through at the right time. The Blackhawks power-play finally connected in the 3rd period as Brent Seabrook blasted a puck past a jumping Andrew Shaw and beating Jaroslav Halak, who could not locate the puck.
Halak and Crawford were perfect the remainder of the game. Halak had a tougher night ahead of him, pelted with 46 shots overall, including several vocal chord blowing saves in the last half of the game.
Neither team was able to strike in over-time. In the shootout Patrick Kane was the first and only player to score, slipping the puck between Halak's legs and into the net. Corey Crawford was perfect throughout the game and carried over into the shootout, stopping all three attempts by the St. Louis Blues.
