Thought in the trapazoid contact with the goalie is frowned upon, thus GTI. To be charging wouldn't he have to leave his feet or take a few additonal strides? Shaw just glided in behind the net and did his best to avoid Smith and his stick.

42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.

While the leaving his feet or "jumping" is clear this is yet another vague rule in the books. "A PLAYER WHO SKATES INTO AN OPPONENT IN ANY MANNER". Aren't players on skates always skating? So under these rules a "glide" could still be considered skating. There is nothing in the rule that says anything about a player having to be taking a stride before contact.

meh the entire rule is vague like all NHL rules. Open to interpretation of whoever wants to put spins on them and make them fit. "Violent check" alone is open to subjectivity of the officials and fans and players themselves. Obviously through this discusion alone we all have a different view on what is violent and what is not.

When did they take out the part about taking 3 or more steps before hitting the opponent?

IMO I would not consider this as charging or GTI... it would just be an illegal hit to the head as explained here:

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.

This can be a minor penalty. But also consider the last sentence, did Smith put himself in a vulnerable position that was unavoidable? Technically, what he did isn't even a penalty depending on your opinion. Either way, Shaw was called for charging... I really don't understand why. According to the rules any hard hit can be called as charging, but really Shaw didn't "hit" him, he clipped his head.

He was trying to play the puck, which at the time, the stick was also in the direction of Shaw's head. Shaw tried to move out of the way and couldn't due to the location of the hit (behind the net). He had no other choice but to try to avoid the stick first, then the goalie. Its hard to do two things at once like that, especially when you're skating.

I'd say Smith was in a vulnerable position, but he could have avoided it by not playing the puck in the first place.

If Shaw even gets a suspension from a "charge" that didn't even result in Smith getting injured, this is a big issue, if you ask me. The NHL just opens up a can of worms anytime they write a rule up without thinking of playing every potential situation.

I won't shed any tears for Henrik or the Cafucks, they are getting their due IMO, but he got his bell rung last night by Brown with a forearm shiver to the chin... no call. Shaw gets 5 and MC and will soon get suplemental discipline no doubt for contact while he was trying to avoid contact.. That is fucked

Ya know Keith's elbow was dirty. I don't deny it but it was well fucking deserved which is why I am not calling Keith a dirty player. How many dirty, gutless hits have the hawks taken from the nucks? How many gutless acts have the hawks put up with from the nucks? Keith was just paying it back. Hell Keith has every right to deliver a flying elbow to Burrows for all the shit he's done to Keith.

So if the Canucks wanna whine, whine. 29 other teams know what your about Vancouver. The league might buy your bullshit the rest dont

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
While I'm not going to go overboard and say the officials are "out to get us", I think we all know who owns the Coyotes and who has a vested interest in keeping them in Phoenix. That being said, I think that there will be a slant in the officiating towards them, which should give the 'hawks all the more reason to win and eliminate them, just to seethe Coyotes owners blow a gasket.

Anyhow, I think team D still needs to be worked on. Dr. Craw definitly kept us in and was matching Smith save for save the last 2 games. Now, we need to give him some help.

Bollig: Monster game, Bickell, Ditto.

Glad to see Hammer rebound, he wasn't too bad this game.

Hossa's picture has replaced Kin Johnsson's on Chicago-area milk cartons.

WOW! How bad does the NHL want this Yots team to win! A few things I would like to comment on.

1) Mike Smith Hit on Toews....what the **** WAS THAT! IMO NHL (Bettman approved)

2)Mike Smith oscar performance on that matrix move behind the net when Shaw clipped him. Funny he is laying on the ice for 4 min. making sure Shaw is out of the game and gets a 5 min. ALL OF A SUDDEN!!! Mike gets the healing power from GOD! gets up shakes his head squirts a little piss in his face and feels better, WOW!!!! But the end result shows that great teams with heart can over come the Evil that runs this league and the teams it supports. Hopefully Shaw gets nothing more then a fine for that bullshit call. If he gets suspended then you know the crooks of the NHL are at it again.

Loved Tippet's F bombs after the tying goal. Yots fucked up in overtime by opening up the game, that is where we shine. Hopefully like mentioned they woke us up from all the bullshit they threw at us.

Hats off to Crawford.

I think the league is done with there bullshit too. Did you see the Kesler dive last night. Mitchell was laughing at him and saying nice dive and the hit on Sedin was classic. Just waiting for Gillis to hold a press conference. LOLOL

I already listed him as the 3A star of the game at the top of p. 2 in this thread.

The Brown hit was clean. Sedin said so himself. Stop listening to Hughson.

After watching some of the series in the East, West defense is why the west is getting the cup this year. The Philly/Pens series alone make our D and goaltending god like. Jesus Brzy is a fucking sieve. Just shoot 5 hole he'll let it in. If I was a coach against him I'd tell my guys either shoot 5 hole or ride fucking pine he's that wide open.

Man Hughson and Simpson are bad. I mean really bad. Almost impossible to listen too.

They suck the sedins off after every game. They are as bad if not worse than the Columbus guys.

Problem is, we got stuck with the CBC feed last night here in the Chicago market. We got stuck listening to his tripe last night...

I wanted to hear the Miller/Fox feed instead. Miller's a legend.
