According to Bob McKenzie, the Chicago Blackhawks have traded Michael Frolik to the Winnipeg Jets. Mark Lazerus confirms that the Blackhawks received two draft picks (74th — John Hayden, 134th — TBD) in the deal.

His tenure in Chicago wasn't overly productive, but his effort on the penalty kill was paramount to the Blackhawks success in 2013. In 136 regular season games, Frolik scored 11 goals, 23 assists, and a minus-5 rating with the Blackhawks. In the playoffs Frolik bumped his game to another level, notching 7 goals, 11 assists, and a plus-5 rating in 34 games.

Frolik had one year remaining on his contract worth $2.33 million.

The Blackhawks have now traded two players that were key components to winning the Cup — Bolland scoring the game winner, Frolik providing the assist.

Sad to see him go. That cap space is a *****. Happy he ends up with the Jets he will get bigger ops to be more offensive there and will bring with him a good defensive game he improved on with his time with the Hawks. We knew there was going to be players moved again. Shouldn't be a shock that Frolik was going to be one of them to clear cap space.

Wish we could have got more back.

Bickell is or will be resigned i am sure...and rightfully so.

Was hoping that getting rid of Bolland would mean they could keep Frolik. Kinda sucks.

yeah I really don't like this. You don't really get anyone better for the role he played, great defensively and him and kruger made our best penalty killing tandem.

and last season believe me I would have helped him out the door last year, but he really found his place this year.

There was never going to be room for him to move up to the lines where he could or should be playing. Nice move by the Hawks to actually send him somewhere that will give him more ice time. He is replaceable even though he was outstanding on the special ends side this season and really gave us some timely goals in the playoffs. He wasn't that good in the regular season when it came to getting goals from him. his special teams play will be the biggest miss. Still have potent PK guys.

Not really that big of a deal. Just wish a higher pick was involved somewhere.

Stans done really well to clear a good chunk of cap space today. Most important.

Its all cyclical guys, I am a firm believer that you can keep moving forward with positions like that. Role players are great and while they are not the easiest to find, they are all out there and in a cap world 2.3 million is a ton of money.

We did it in 2010 turning over those guys and lost a TON in scoring, right now we haven't sacrificed any scoring more or less, bring in the next crop of prospects and lock up the guys that you CANNOT replace.

He is replaceable but was outstanding on the PK. So.....how do you replace "outstanding" ? Of course he has offensive liabilities, but that's a lot easier to take with what he brings defensively. He's not like Bolland, who was never a 2nd line center, and lost both his 3rd line center and PK responsibilities to other players and you're basically stuck with a 3.4 million cap hit on a 4th line center who can't do much of anything else. Frolik wasn't that.

Or you can wait until next season to see if he is actually missed on the PK. Until then it's speculation. Kruger, Toews, Hossa are still brilliant penalty killers. Saad is learning it too. Craw improved on that part of the pressure game also. Im glad they aren't paying nearly 2.5 mill for a penalty killer who wasn't going to find room on the higher lines where he actually belongs..he should be thrilled to be going to the Jets where he will get much more icetime. Be happy for the player here.

Bolland has ment more to this team the last few years than Frolik. Don't even bother going there based on Bollands season this year. Even suggesting Froik has been more important than Bolland is crazy talk. Don't even know what Bolland has to do with Frolik being delt anyways. Why bring his name up in this they are both gone now. Move on and hav a little faith that the pros know what they are doing and the farm system has talent on it that can step up if needed.

Frolik was a 1st round pick slated to be a top 6 forward until a year ago when it finally hit him that if he wanted to stay in the league he needed to change. He did and was great at his role....regardless he was getting 2.4 million for a role that can be picked up.

Don't forget Sharp was a GREAT penalty killer with an outrageous 7 shorties in 2007.... he is an after thought though on the pk for some reason.

Yes Sharpy too indeed. This team isn't lacking penalty killers by a long shot by losing Frolik. Im sad to see him go but shit its not changing the franchise in any way or form. Hawks will still go into next season as a top contender.

I didn't mean overall, I meant right now. I compare them because that's why Bolland was moved. He was expendable, he lost his job(s). They already had players who could do what he did. No of course Bolland meant more for the Hawks over his entire career here when compared to Frolik. It's just that right now, Frolik was a more valuable player for the Hawks. Can you honestly argue against that? Did you think that would've changed?

I don't think it's going to kill them, it just would've been nice to keep that PK unit intact for another season, to keep that chemistry. I'm actually more worried about it potentially meaning that Bickell is going to get a crazy contract more than anything else.

Yea always tough to lose anyone who was on a team that won it all so the Hawks have taught me (except Stalberg), but this is a good move cap wise. We are nearing the cap floor at this rate!!!

I think both were moved and did zero damage to the team and cleared up vital cap space. Don't know what the big deal is at all. I really see it as something that simple. Talents going to be moved in this cap world. Moving lower line talent is the best way to do it if that option is there. Hawks are in a great spot now. Im loving both moves for the reality of the business. Stan has done well yet again.

Bolland up until this year - would consistently be one of Q's top minute guy in the playoffs - 2nd or first at times

So yes - he was more valuable than Frolik. Anyone that watched games more than this year will acknowledge this.

Frolik is a 2.3 million dollar 4th liner that played about 10-12min a game. You can find that for 1mil dollars out of a vet that will kill penalties just as well.

Hawks did very well selling high on him.

Even this season. THIS season.

Bolland was the second line center. THIS season.

Frolik was a fourth liner. THIS season.

Biggest reason Bolland's minutes were down in the playoffs was more his health than anything He wasn't 100% THIS season in the playoffs
