Some really good stuff here from Adam Rank joining the CHGO podcast guys.

I don’t agree with everything he says, but he’s a really earnest good dude, and I enjoyed this episode.

Some highlighted comments:

-Poles has likely already made up his mind on Fields, and Rank believes if he moves off of Fields, it will likely happen before free agency.

-Matt Eberflus’ future is still wide open. Rank seems to actually be a little pessimistic on Eberflus staying, saying that a constant theme for the Bears during his tenure—win or lose—is coming into a game unprepared. Closing has obviously also been a big bugaboo. A loss to Green Bay, especially if the Bears look bad while losing, could be it for Eberflus.

-Rank loves Caleb Williams, says it’s ridiculous to compare him with other top QBs in recent years. He’s a “much better” prospect than the likes of Bryce Young. He also says Caleb Williams will be a “great” QB in the NFL.

^^^At the same time, he says even though he thinks Williams will be great, it’s a question of whole-roster building. Taking Caleb Williams is in essence costing you 3 first rounders (I disagree with him on this logic, but see where he’s coming from). So taking Williams has the potential to cost you greatly in your quest to build a great team.

-Aside from trading Justin Fields before free agency, the single biggest thing that will indicate the Bears are moving on from Fields is if they sign or trade for a good WR before the draft, because that would indicate they’re not taking MHJ (I again disagree with him here, but I get it. In fact, I would argue that the single biggest sign of the Bears moving on from Fields would be if they fire Eberflus on Black Monday, which I personally don’t think will happen.)

-He talks about how it’s a shame that a fanbase with as much passion, history and tradition as the Chicago Bears has become a cesspool of personally attacking people who disagree with you. It’s possible to disagree and not devolve into name-calling, he says. (I agree, but I would just add that that’s not unique to Bears fandom, and in the age of social media, it’s inevitable—in sports, in life, in politics, in entertainment, etc.)

Anyway, thought some of you might enjoy this episode.

If he thinks all of those things, his conclusion is just wrong. Nothing is more important than getting the QB.

If he thinks Caleb is going to be great, there is no real discussion about what the path is. Especially since they'll have an abundance of assets and opportunities to build the roster whichever way they go to go with an already solid foundation of the roster (and resetting the rookie contract affords you even more resources in that regard).

This is a fantasy football guy who is just sharing his opinion, right?

Nothing connecting him to the org?

Either way, if you think Williams is going to be great, you take him.

Thanks for posting and haven't listened yet but Adam Rank should just stick with fantasy football. I take pretty much anything he says outside of fantasy football as a joke.

exactly, who gives a shit what he thinks.

At this point, Williams floor >>> Fields is now.
At the very least, if he ends up just being good you take him.
This s/b a no brainer decision for any competent NFL GM to make.
Hopefully, the #1 pick becomes mostly official this weekend.

I completely agree with this. Like @modo has mentioned a few times...it doesn't matter if Fields "balls out" against ATL and GB. The decision has already been made with Bears brass. I read somewhere that most GMs have already made up their minds on rookie contract QBs DURING the 3rd year.

He also had the over under for Bear wins this year at 12. Being right (or wrong) about one thing...

That really is a troubling comment regarding Williams. It’s definitely a shot at the coaching staff and how they handled Williams versus the rest of the team.
Sounds like the Gremans bombed when it came to a Pre Madonna.

I'm hoping they "lose out" to finish at 6-11 and maybe get a top 7 pick.
This should make Poles clean house so the rinse/repeat cycle starts over.

The logic that taking Williams costs you multiple first rounders is so idiotic.

You know what actually cost us multiple first rounders which hampered our rebuild? Trading up for Fields.

There is absolutely a benefit to taking a QB with a pick you already own, as you get to avoid the QB Trade-Up premium.
