Only your ALL TIME favorites

Here are the two I can think of right now:

Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

Its contemporary literature. A fucking masterpiece imo. Dude took a decade or some shit of obsession to craft the thing. Some critics think its a work of bloated self indulgence by the author, but I think that is some bullshit. There is plot, characters, and development. But imo its all about the writing. I didn't really give a **** what was happening half the time. Just savored the writing,

House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski

This book is character and plot driven. But it does some things I have never seen a book do before. Its a masterpiece imo. If you are interested, DO NOT read ANYTHING about it. Just buy the thing in print. No kindle shit. And do not fucking flip through it. Just buy it and start reading. Seriously though, this book is best enjoyed without knowing what is coming.

Honorable mentions:
Still life with woodpecker
Lonesome dove
Shogun
Illuminatus Trillogy
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
Water Music
Blood Meridian
Grapes of Wrath

I'm going to cheat a little and say the Kushiel trilogy by Jacqueline Carey. They're a combination of sci-fi, action, & romance (sort of).

love Infinite Jest and usually I dont care for stuff that could be labeled modern/post-modern, but Wallaces novel isnt a chore to slog through, it isnt gimmicky, its just imaginative and creative and just plain good. And funny as hell. 2/3-3/4 of The Broom of the System is right on par with IJ but then it does start to drag a little.

Didnt care for House of Leaves, going into it the premise had me really excited but it just didnt do it for me.

I love McCarthys Cities of the Plain.

catch 22 is up there, as is dead souls.

Im sure Im forgetting something I shouldnt be.

Harry Potter is on my list too. imo, writing is good enough, if not exceptional. But the characters are fucking great and the setting/lore is great.

I read the first 2 books of this series but somehow they were kind of a slog for me. Maybe I was too young or some shit.
