I am a huge fan of Orson Scott Card's Ender Series. Most people have heard of Ender's Game, even before the movie. And the book is great. But imo, his series doesn't get its meat until Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind. Some of the most forward thinking, smartest hard scifi ever written imo. Too bad it turns out the author is a complete fucked up wackjob psycho.

ND is horrible.
I don't necessarily have favorites, but I did remember this excellent tome just now when someone told me I must not understand the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Probably the best written/most honest/unbiased book i've read on the conflict i've ever read. It really isn't about the whole conflict, but it's really good at explaining what was going on in Lebanon at the time of the civil wars/Israeli invasion, etc.

Most of the stuff that's coming out now is horribly slanted and has an obvious agenda.....I don't usually like those types of books even if I agree with the agenda.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Washington Huskies
Only your ALL TIME favorites

Here are the two I can think of right now:

Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

Its contemporary literature. A fucking masterpiece imo. Dude took a decade or some shit of obsession to craft the thing. Some critics think its a work of bloated self indulgence by the author, but I think that is some bullshit. There is plot, characters, and development. But imo its all about the writing. I didn't really give a **** what was happening half the time. Just savored the writing,

House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski

This book is character and plot driven. But it does some things I have never seen a book do before. Its a masterpiece imo. If you are interested, DO NOT read ANYTHING about it. Just buy the thing in print. No kindle shit. And do not fucking flip through it. Just buy it and start reading. Seriously though, this book is best enjoyed without knowing what is coming.

Honorable mentions:
Still life with woodpecker
Lonesome dove
Shogun
Illuminatus Trillogy
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
Water Music
Blood Meridian
Grapes of Wrath

I just cracked open House of Leaves last night.

"A sweeping and dramatic history of the last half century of conflict in the Middle East from an award-winning journalist who has covered the region for over thirty years, The Great War for Civilisation unflinchingly chronicles the tragedy of the region from the Algerian Civil War to the Iranian Revolution; from the American hostage crisis in Beirut to the Iran-Iraq War; from the 1991 Gulf War to the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. A book of searing drama as well as lucid, incisive analysis, The Great War for Civilisation is a work of major importance for today's world."

I'm a Medieval history buff and focus on the period between 1399 and 1603. My favorite book is Henry VIII by Lacey Baldwin Smith. Unlike the usual treatment of him, this offers some interesting insight into why he did what he did.

Dragonlance. Shit, I forgot all about those. Good stuff.

But seriously, if you can get through it, Count of Monte Cristo is a GREAT fucking book.

Yeah, its one of those that everyone should read.

Surprised you listed Fountainhead. I liked that book a lot as a story, but it presented such a twisted almost psychopath view of the world.
