I am going to give up soda.
I was never a big soda drinker, but when I quit smoking cigarettes...I started craving a cola here and there. The combo of caffeine and sugar subbed nicely for nicotine I suppose. Time to lose that crutch for a while and get my body back into bicycle riding weather shape.

A friend of mine gave up soda for a month on a dare from his wife.
He did, and said the first one he had after the month was over burned his tongue and almost made his heart leap out of his chest.
Said he had no idea how crazy sweet it was until he walked away from it.

Not just a Catholic thing. It's not required in the New Testament, shouldn't be legalistic or involuntary, but it's discussed, and it's done, for reasons of prayer and supplication (asking, seeking wisdom), especially in Acts. Could have other benefits, like for health and focus.
