I had it for years, like a huge chunk of the population it seems. Been mostly gone for a while though. All diet for me.

It's mostly an imbalance in your stomach. Reducing junk foods and adding more fiber and minerals seems to be the best long term solution. Which, hello, as an adult, you should probably be doing anyways. Diets high in soy product, corn product seem to have problems all around, and the acid reflux is ONE way for your body to warn you that you're being neglectful. You could use blockers and inhibitors, but then you treat symptoms not root problems. For me, it was the creeping up of soy products in my diet that really did it. Once you drop that soy, things got better everywhere in my health. Only soy product I eat now is natto, and that's only because it's fermented and nutritionally packed with hard to obtain vitamins.

I've had it since I was born. Something about my premature status and the sphincters in my stomach and throat not being fully developed. Used to projectile vomit all the time as kid out of nowhere, and have always struggled with sever reflux side effects as a kid, teen, and now adult. Haven't gotten on any meds for it, and love spicy food. I'm sure it's going to really wear me down one day. The struggle is real.

The weirdest things give me bad heartburn as well. Donuts and sometimes milk can be really hard me.

I hear nexium? (purple pill?) does wonders from doctor friends if the diet route isn't working for you.

I think mine was brought on by me eating dinner and lying on the couch all the time.
Plus, over eating and eating before bed.
I've been controlling food/diet to find my triggers. Whole wheat seems to be mine with the usual tomato, coffee..
I've even completley cut myself off of alcohol for the past month.
I'm going to wean off the meds starting next week and get a scope done in Jan.
Good to hear you beat yours.

Dude, I feel so bad for you...
Milk is probably doing it due to the fat.
I read it takes a lot of acid to digest fat.

Alcohol is by far my biggest trigger food. Then the usual things like tomato based foods and spicy foods. Crystallas is 100% right.... the blockers treat the symptoms and not the cause. Change your diet and it'll go away. Then you can gradually add back in the other stuff in moderation. (at least for me I could)

And I don't think it has anything to do with age by the way. Mine was TERRIBLE in my early 20's but at 40 it's not a big problem for me. It's all diet.

I do.... and am in a similar situation.... been on meds for like 1.5 months.

Doc says it will just take time to let my stomach heal itself and gave me a vague notion of reducing my med intake, but I am not reducing the med intake below once a day because right now when I do the acid reflux comes back.

Alcohol and spicy foods mess with me the worst.

I am trying to cut down on Alcohol and give up spicy foods until my stomach is "healed".

H8 dis shit.

Yeah, point is to use the meds to heal the wound in the esophogus while changing the diet to ensure less heart burn.
I'm probably gonna keep the current diet going for a few more months then slowly add a beer here and there to test it out.
This absolutely sucks ass.

Also, make sure to wean off the meds guys. I read if you just quit cold turkey the body will create excessive acid to make up the difference and you'll be back to square 1.

I used to have it bad. When I switched to a low carb diet it went away almost immediately.

If I eat like crap during a cheat day or something like that I have to have a ZanTac because I know I won't sleep otherwise. Like lava in the throat. it is awful.

It really is a diet thing for most people.

Gah, I lived on hard liquor for years. I forget how bad it used to be mixed with the reflux every day. Crazy what a person can become accustomed too.

You both seem to know what causes it so the solution is simple. Get off the meds and stop causing the problem.

I've had similar problems, but w/my stomach. If I overeat or eat what I know is going to hurt me, I'll continue having those problems but I don't so I don't. Meds won't change that.

My bro diagnosed with Crohn's and on meds for it for most of his adult life. He'd often say I had the same thing and doctors had said I should be treated for it. I declined the offer to be treated for it and told bro I could control it without meds just as he could if he wanted to but, no, nobody wants to listen to Spartan when I tell them they don't need the evil pharmaceuticals. He said it was a disease. I said they just say it is so they can take your money and push their drugs on you. It's really just bad shit you're eating that your body will not tolerate.

Long story short, he was on meds for the longest time. I can safely say for well over a decade and was often miserable. He would tell me how bad it felt while eating from a bag of Doritos. Kept telling him it was the junk he was eating and not so much some incurable disease doctors decided to put a name on so they could profit from it. After a concerted effort to see different doctors and try something different he finally hit upon a good doctor who told him to see a nutritionist and change his diet. He did so about 2 years ago and hasn't had a problem since.
