Well my kids play, and I’ll play with them sometimes. When everything was closed during the height of the Pandemic, we started playing more games at home. So the only Magic cards I’ve ever bought were a couple of starter decks. Magic Cards, a set of Crisloid Dominoes, and Backgammon board, etc.
These cards (two paper boxes worth) were given to me by an acquaintance at work. I gave him a hand moving, (he’s transferring) and he asked me if I wanted his cards, and some other various shit.
I’ve been looking up the cards here and there, since then. Not counting $5-$10 cards, I’ve found over $600 worth so far. I’m not even 10% through them though.

I had to look up the sets I have/played way way back in my boomer youth.
I stopped playing/collecting around 96/97 as Mirage/visions would be the last expansion set I bought any of. I must've started sometime in 93/94.
That was obviously before anything was marked in rarity. I still think that it is funny how the difference between alpha and beta was simply the cut of the corner of the card. Some kids back in the day would trim their cards down to make them look like alpha cards for trading purposes.

A friend was into it back in the day. I never really cared, but bought a bunch. Newest I have is Ice Age/4th ed stuff. I got them to play, but at the same time some of the best strat games on PC were online and RPGs were really in a golden age, so if I needed to get my nerd fix with games, video games had me covered with a lot less clean-up.
Glad it's still going. It dies off and rebounds a lot (seems like at least), but shit, if I can cash in my stock on a rainy day, I'm all for it.
