I completely agree the Cubs have a markedly better chance of winning the WS this year than any other playoff team. But 22% means there's a 78% chance it will not happen this year. I think it will happen sometime within the next 5 years though, and there's a lot of awfully good baseball to be watched until it does.

I used to be like Cubsmann when I was younger. I would have seen this team and thought there was just no way they could fail. Then if they did I'd be crushed and in tears. As I've aged, I've tempered that a bit and learned to just appreciate the ride. And as long as that ride ends one season in the near future with the Cubs winning their final playoff game, I'm good. :yep:

Trusts me I'm with you. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen this year but this team is loaded with young talent and is nearly certain to be back again and soon.

Yeah, that's just it. I'm not trying to be pessimistic here. This team is going to be so fun to watch for years to come. And one of those years (hopefully this one) will likely see a WS win.

We'll destroy any team we face. Better save a sick day for the parade in November. Over 5,000,000 people will attend.

Better do it this year. Its hard to keep a WS level pitching staff together and have it all line up. Don't count nothing until it happens, but chances with ERA leaders Arrieta/Hendricks backed by playoff gamers Lester/Lackey (and a hot Lester at that) DO NOT HAPPEN OFTEN!!!!

Edwards Jr. is the biggest concern. Him or Stropp need to get going for October, then let the young bats do their thing. Bryant/Rizzo/Fowler/Baez/Russell looks like an unbeatable combination right now. Get it done.

Yeah nothing to fear but fear itself. The Cubs are positioned so well now with them peaking at the end of the season. Their pitching and defense will win the title this year. I would bet on it. No one this year has shown that they can consistently beat the Cubs. Im thinking it will be Giants, Dodgers, Rangers.

What? The Mets owned the Cubs.

I think anything less than getting to the WS will be a huge disappointment to me.

Not me. The only way I'll be hugely disappointed is if they get knocked out in the NLDS. It's been nice watching the season, but I went in expecting this team to at least be back in the NLCS.

They lost in NLCS last season. They have a much improved team this season, which is why I will be disappointed if they don't make it to the WS.

If we're going to lose, it'll be in the NLDS. Best of 5 scares me. But when you get into best of seven with a team as complete and deep as the Cubs -- our odds of winning increases. Teams will have a huge problem eliminating us in a seven game series. Best of 5, you face a couple of hot pitchers at the wrong time and boom - season over.

If we can survive the NLDS, look out. No NL team will take us out in the NLCS. And I agree - Cubs/Red Sox WS would be amazing. The Red Sox starting pitching doesn't scare me but holy crap - they have sick hitting. That would be a most watched World Series in the history of baseball.

I'd love that as a red sox fan. I wanna see the cubs win a WS so I wouldn't mind losing to them if it came down to it.

The Red Sox have been my number 2 team since 1970 so they have a place in my heart and several of my best friends are Boston fans. Of course I'll be rooting against this time but it sure would be fun.

Yeah I have family over in RI, and I started watching baseball there while visiting as a little kid. My grandpa made me a red sox fan. Im thankful for that haha. Took him around 75 years to finally see a WS win for them. But he's seen 3 now so I'm happy for him!

Yeah our pitching isn't that good but we make up for it with our offense. It's a fun team to watch this year.

As far as what would constitute a disappointment - if we lose in the NLDS I would be devastated. And if we lost in the NLCS, I'd be equally as crushed. But if we win the pennant and lose in the World Series, I'd be heart broken but still very grateful to have made it. I would think about the Royals losing in 2014 and winning in 2015. I think we'd follow a similar trajectory.

The Cubs will be competitive for many, many years. But being competitive isn't the same as being the favorites. We've largely avoided major injuries (other than Schwarber) and we never know when an opportunity this good will roll around again. Every starting pitcher we have is healthy and we'll have our entire bullpen available (Strop is due back soon). Plus all our position players are good. This might be the best chance we'll ever have.

The NLDS is not our friend this year as I truly believe that this is an awfully tough team in a 7 game series, but in a 5? The randomness of baseball is in play. Fortunately none of the thre WC teams seem to want to win it. We couldn't possibly be so lucky as for them to finish in a three way tie and have the team we face burn their top 2 starters could we?

For clarity, would it be true for Cub Fans that they only way they lose in the NLDS is some sort of fluke instead of a team just being better than them at the time of play? I read that in some of the posts here, so I toss that idea out there.

You're mixing two separate concepts. A team can play better without being better. I'm reasonably certain that the Pirates were a better team than us in 2015 but sample size did them in. That's not what I'd call a fluke but it is a direct result of a 1 game sample size. The difference between a 100 win team and a 74 win team is 1 win a week and bad teams beat great teams literally every day in the 162 game schedule. None of the WC contenders are close to us in talent but they sure may win a game or two. In a 7 game series the sample size is larger and thus less likely for lesser talent to beat greater talent. If the Cubs lose the NLDS they will have lost to a lesser team with the aid of sample size but that's not a fluke. A fluke is a win aided by some strang random event. You might win a game that way but not a series.

So If the Cubs lose, you'll always say the better team did not win?
