That Votto extension.... wow. That's Pujols money.

The way I think they justify it is that...

1. Votto is younger

2. Votto is almost as good as Pujols

3. They probably have TV $ and other $ coming in and are playing to win now

Very risky contract but I think they'll be happy with it for at least 4 or 5 of the early years, maybe more. Votto is generally healthy and fairly athletic.

Call me crazy, but at this point, I'd rather have Votto on my team. He's younger, more athletic and he's been able to stay off the DL.

Nice.

For context, an injured (blinded) military vet threw a strike for the ceremonial first pitch.

Is this where we make the joke that he wouldn't have walked in the tying run or would that be in poor taste?

He's a real American hero, he definitely wouldn't have blown the game.

He's not Pujols, though -- a guy who's a first ballot HoF player. A guy who went to the second biggest market in the country and has over 10 consecutive years of being one of the two or three best offensive players in baseball and has fairly similar defensive credentials. A guy who's a staple in the Latin community and he went to a city that has a large Latin community. The Angels can afford to pay Pujols, and quite frankly, he's worth that invenstment, considering the kind of revenue he'll generate for that team.

Now don't get me wrong, Votto is a fantastic talent. But a mid-market team hamstringing themselves with over a quarter of their payroll dedicated to one guy? Yeesh, I'm not sure about that. Especially considering the fact that first base isn't necessarily a premium position. If it was starting pitching, centerfield or shortstop, then yeah, I could see making that commitment. But a first baseman? Nah. Well, not for Cincy at least.

Supposedly Cincy is getting a new TV deal soon that should seriously up their revenue. Their payroll is going to go way up the next few years. I agree with your assessment of the situation though.

It's both a matter of increased revenue and also how much a win is valuated on the free agent market. Contracts are also somewhat backloaded, adjusted for future inflation, etc. So Votto's contract value may be slightly different from Pujols' because of various factors.

Park factors suggest that the Trop is one of the least hitter-friendly parks in the majors. You do have to wonder whether his grand slam would've found the basket at Wrigley yesterday, though.

115-year-old Jamie Moyer couldn't keep the Astros grounded.

So now the Cubs are officially worse than the Astros for the first time this season

He should've said it was about his undying love for Starlin Castro.

Zambrano makes his season debut against the Reds later today. I hope they light him up like a Christmas tree.

He'll end up going 8 innings, three hits, one walk, one run, strike out 11. FML.

That's probably not likely but I think he'll be solid for five innings or so before the Reds get to him.
