He's not Pujols, though -- a guy who's a first ballot HoF player. A guy who went to the second biggest market in the country and has over 10 consecutive years of being one of the two or three best offensive players in baseball and has fairly similar defensive credentials. A guy who's a staple in the Latin community and he went to a city that has a large Latin community. The Angels can afford to pay Pujols, and quite frankly, he's worth that invenstment, considering the kind of revenue he'll generate for that team.
Now don't get me wrong, Votto is a fantastic talent. But a mid-market team hamstringing themselves with over a quarter of their payroll dedicated to one guy? Yeesh, I'm not sure about that. Especially considering the fact that first base isn't necessarily a premium position. If it was starting pitching, centerfield or shortstop, then yeah, I could see making that commitment. But a first baseman? Nah. Well, not for Cincy at least.
