Mike D'Antoni, in my opinion, is a bad fit for most teams. He utilizes a style that isn't going to win you many Championships... A small center and a 'stretch' PF. In order to run the offense he want, the team usually gives up something on the defensive end because there's no way that the Jared Jefferies+Amare Stoudemire type-front-courts of the league are going to rebound efficiently enough or defend well enough to contend for a title.
He was lucky that in Phoenix, for a little while, he had Shawn Marion in his prime and Kurt Thomas close to his. Otherwise, that team would have constantly had too terrible quality defense and rebounding to contend against the likes of the Spurs.
I said it from day 1 after the DEN trade... Mike D'Antoni has the hottest coaching seat in the NBA. Even moreso than Erik Spoelstra in Miami... D'Antoni has now lost a lot of things he depended upon:
His best 3-point spot-up shooters (Gallinari, Felton, Chandler), and his best defender (Chandler). That team also has horrendous rebounding...
