There's more to defense than just scoring--there's shutting down passing and shooting lanes, winning board battles, retrieving and taking the puck away from the opposition, making the outlet pass, and holding the puck in at the opposing blueline. Little of any of those aspects of defensemen makes the scoresheet and gets noticed unless you (royal you) are paying attention.

Right now Vlassic, and Crevier, are the only ones really doing any of that. Jones? Has he ever kept the puck in at the blueline and not caused an odd-man rush--on the powerplay or not. Kaiser? He goes out of position and gets beaten like Rodney King. Brodie regularly goes out of position doesn't win board battles, and gets beaten like Gary Coleman trying to take on Kenny Norton. Martinez is old and slow. Same with Murphy, even though Murphy is passable at this point in his career at D. Further, the netminding has been bad this year with Mrazek not breaking .900 so far and Soder pulling a very meh. .906.

The adage of "offense sells tickets; defense wins championships" is true in hockey as well.
Never underestimate the value of a player already here in the system being coached by your coaches and playing with future teammates.... vs not here. No matter what their numbers look like elsewhere

I fear this move failed to get our Crosby, and Bedard was the Malkin.

This may have been an epic multi championship blunder for the history books.

Haha

Bedard aint Malkin
He is a highly skilled passer with elite vision, hockey IQ, and an accurate whip shot that changed the sport(mimicks abound) that puts him at the hall of fame level of production.

He's nothing like the towering Russian or Crosby in terms of style or body and while Demidov is also more comparable to Bedard than either, I think his 200 foot game is more comparable in potential to Cellibrini .

The one argument against drafting Demidov would be that you have your offensive freak show points train in Bedard and are hunting for everything else to support it .

The Hawks were wrong and over thought that aspect, fooled themselves but it's the only explanation I can muster...hoping they wouldn't actually let the Canadians do their usual character smear tactics to drop a player pre-draft.

I'm pretty happy with Davidson overall...but I don't know what the **** he did here and it's a near fireable offense I have to overlook because the farm might be better than it's ever been.

Phase two is retaining this club value while waiting for the elite in this large group to emerge and develop.

Gotta trade 28 year old Danato's along the way and it's gonna suck.

Really should have traded Kurashev last year and that's gonna repeatedly haunt him into doing the deadline dirty to Donato.
