My new car is great. Ive pushed it 14000 miles already and Ive only had to get one oil change. The onboard computer measures the viscosity of the oil, and tells me when I should get an oil change. My car will be a year old in august. I do use synthetic oil, but I would have had to get about 4 oil changes at this point with traditional oil. at about 30-40 bucks for an oil change of regular oil the synthetic is definitely worth it in my book if I only have to change my oil once a year, and I did more than normal driving this year so it may even be less.

One oil change on 14,000 miles? So how did cars go from needing an oil change every 3000 miles to now once a year or every 14,000 miles? What changed?

My car does same thing. I just dont put synthetic in mine. I just have whatever the dealer decides to use.

I use Royal Purple in my Roush, shit is fucking expensive but damn she runs good, and use castrol in her van. I have the computer in her van set to let me know when it hits 6000 miles, then change it. With the car it is generally every 3 months, as the distance I drive it I never get to the low end of recommended "change after x miles."

The 3000 mile thing is actually more of a myth then anything else. (This was told to me by a very good friend I grew up with who happens to be a mechanic). You should base it more on the type of driving you do, and when you regularly check your oil, the color of said oil. That whole 3000 mile thing is somoethign manufcturers came up with to keep you coming to them for service.

The 3k miles was a way to sell more oil from day one. Now though on board computers collect data and (on mine at least) give me a oil life percentage (I think mine is around 70% right now) when I get to around 20% I start thinking about getting it changed.

I didn't know it came in different colors or I would be using purple. It is my signature color.

Royal purple is a brand name, and if you feel like paying $8 a quart for your little car, be my guest. You dont need to run it in yours.

What vehicles would you recommend using it for?

Hot rods, muscle cars, those type of vehicles, this is from talking to other 'real' motorheads/gearheads. They also say if you're a tuner person, they highly recommend Castrol, as they make oils specifically for them, although you can use RP in them.

I am by far no expert, I just did a little research and talked to some people at various Pony shows and other car shows, so take what I am saying with a grain of salt.

Most of the cars in the fast & Furious movies, those are tuners.....souped up foreign imports that sound like someone wet farting into a coffee can as they drive by.

Oooooooooh The ones that light up at the bottom.

I have another question about oil. You know how they have numbers like 20, 30, 40? How do you know which to use and are you suppose to use a different one in winter?

The different numbers have to do with viscosity they actually call it weight of the oil, check your owners manual or look it up online. As to changing types in winter....it's debatable...some recommend it, others dont.

Typically go with what your owner's manual suggests. I think mine has recommendations for both normal and cold weather. Luckily I don't have to worry about cold weather causing engine problems, doesn't get cold enough in Fla.

For the record I love Supras (hence the name) but what they did to that Supra in the First Fast and Furious movie was criminal. And bubble you even have to admit built right a Supra is fucking fast.

I am just trying to max out performance on my 06 Dodge Ram. Also is there a good place to find a dvd player/ entertainment unit for my truck there already are video monitors in my headrests, the wiring is there, just gotta find the main unit. Either that or pull the headrests and put in a new system.

I have an 05 Roush Stage 1. It's an S197 engine that I have some mods done to, non factory chip, cold air intake and a few other little toys that depending on what tune I use, I can get as near to 400hp as I can with out going to to a turbo or supercharger (which wold jack it to the 500hp range). had the Roush exhaust and suspension package when I bought it, I upgraded to a borla exhaust.
