The best teams build through the draft. Constantly trading draft Capitol away for players that have already played their best football is not smart. That’s why pace failed so miserably (trading extra draft Capital for Mack and Trubisky). I would do a 1 for 1 trade, but once you start talking multiple day 1 or 2 picks you lose me. I understand another defensive stud would look good on this defense, but if you’re drafting well, like Poles has been in the first 3 rounds, then it’s a waste. Those draft picks could be used to fill 2 holes next year. It’s not like we are one piece away from a Super Bowl either. Our window isn’t even open yet, IMO.
The draft is a crap shoot, I get that. But taking shots on players who will not eat up massive amounts of cap to fill holes is the best way to win in the nfl. Trading for a superstar that will take away draft capital and cut into your cap significantly won’t leave much else to fill all of the other holes. When there are 33 different position to fill, trading a lot of assets to fill one position magnificently is a losing strategy that the bears have employed many times before (Jay Cutler, Julius Peppers, Khalil Mack, etc.). Let’s learn from the past and let Poles cook. This team isn’t a finished product, yet. The best opportunity to get the most out of it is to draft talented young players who won’t tie up a lot of the cap to fill holes.
When you start drafting well for long enough, then you become the team that’s trading talent for more picks. That’s how you create a dynasty. Not trading your draft picks for other teams talent.
