I read somewhere the Hawks would not be able to protect Jokiharju in the expansion draft. Sort of like what happened to TVR a couple years back when they lost him for no compensation to Vegas.
It's not that he couldn't be protected...it's that he wouldn't automatically be protected. They'd have to use either a D slot or a skater slot--depending if they go the 7F3D or 8 Skaters route.
As it stands now, Toews, Kane, Keith and Seabrook are automatically protected via their NMC's. The only player that meets/is expected to meet exposure requirements is Delia. Everyone else is either unsigned, or has not met the 40/70 exposure requirement. Joker would have been in the mix (unlike Boqvist), but the way the 'hawks are lined up, they could either protect only Joker as a D-man apart from Keityh/Seabs, or they go with the 8 skater scheme if they wanted to protect another D-man, and then possibly expose more FWDs than they want to.
TVR actually was a good scenario--the 'hawks didn't lose much to Vegas--certainly not a blue-chip player and in expansion that's about all you could hope for.
Going into Seattle expansion, I think the only player the would be Can't-lose is Debrincat (at least in terms of those already signed through). You might make somewhat of an argument for Strome, Murph, or Gilbert. so that's how the 'hawks should play it. Had the 'hawks kept Joker, it would've only a question of who gets exposed in his stead. Depending on his development, I personally would have called Maata, deHaan, or even Murph expendable (maybe not Gilbert, but I'll admit I really like his play as a bottom-pair D-man), but I think most likely the dangled piece the Seattle Battle Cattle would take with or without Joker would be a FWD.
