I wouldn't put Acho inside.

OLB in this system is only responsible for the outside on his side, the reads are very easy. Moving inside you are responsible for both directions.

Willie Young looks out of place at outside linebacker. I wouldn't be surprised if he's traded. I don't think he'll be traded this year though with all the injuries piling up.

EDIT: He's a 4-3 defensive end, he doesn't have the build to be an inside linebacker.

I am suggesting Young play OLB.

Very good rewrite up very helpful. I see that Acho weighs like 257 lbs. and am wondering if Shea and Acho as the ILB's with Willie Young at OLB with McPhee is a possibility next season. These four would seem to be the most talented LB's on the Bears. I think Shea and Acho are UFA's so not sure what they would cost.

Houston is gone next year if the Bears keep him they have to pay 6.99MM but its 2.99MM of dead cap if they cut him. With a big overall cap number this is an easy call.

Probably the last time Jay was this comfortable was his second year under Martz where he was 7-3 before getting hurt. I suspect two reasons for this are he is not focusing on one guy yet Gase is cutting down on how many options he has to throw to.

Your Eric Berry idea would be great. If the Bears were to add a corner in the first round and sign Berry the secondary could become a real strength of the defense.

I cannot see them bringing Houston back if they can save 4 million.

He looks terrible in space and does not get the pass rush required to be only a straight ahead player.

He may improve as his knee comes around, but we are very close to 1 year, which is usually when it it back to what it is going to be.

I am suggesting Young play OLB.

I do not agree that Young physically can't play the OLB position.

But he is not going to be great in coverage so he much provide the pass rush required to off set the weakness.

You can have OLBs who are not coverage guys, but they need to bring a rush every time.

Would anyone happen to have a working link to the full game? I have been unable to rewash except for from clips and some ass hat videotaping his television on YouTube at potato resolution and even that link has been taken down. I never would've believed that this year of all years that I may subscribe to game pass, but it's a good feeling. Now even more so than ever I want to watch the all 22 multiple passes through. It really is more exciting starting from in the hole and watching the players develop especially after years of not seeing any development at all

Good write up as always.

I'll only comment on Leno. For me I look at it from a different perspective. I don't think Bushrod is really that good. He's probably 'NFL average' which means he's replacable by a better player or another 'NFL average' player that costs less. Leno, being a young, physically talented player, only has to show he can be average before he starts adding value to the team.

Where this logic can fail is when things go all Webb. That's when you take an athlete playing at an average level and pay him like a starter. For Leno he's got to do the following:

1 - Get 'average', where he's worth playing time.
2 - Flash or take the next step and develop past that 'average' - This can take time, but this is also where Webb just couldn't take the next step.
3 - Become consistent - Here's where he would be worth a 2nd contract.

I've always hated signing or resigning someone based solely on potential. When looking along the OL this happens when someone shows they are athletic. I'm hoping that doesn't happen in this case for you Bears fans.

OLB in this system is only responsible for the outside on his side, the reads are very easy. Moving inside you are responsible for both directions.

In addition to the reads being different lateral movement is critical for inside versus downfield movement from OLB. Urlacher had phenomenal speed and range from sideline to sideline, which when combined with his ability to diagnose and react quickly, and communicate effectively served him quite well in his years. Then you have players like Bostic who can get good lateral movement but couldn't make a read. I think Jonathan Bostic is what the child of Brian Urlacher and Paris Hilton would have been; all the physical tools but unable to read A Dr. Seuss book.

Being able to make the reads is still the most important part of the position I can't remember the guys names off the top of my head now but there are several current examples of MLB with less than optimal lateral speed and agility, but they make up for it by being able to make the read much quicker. Ideally you would have all The above skill sets in addition to size, coverage ability, and still being able to effectively rush the passer when things need to be shaken up, but players with the full package tend to be rare, they rate as rare as Phil Emery would say.

Great write up Windy per usual.

Something to think about. When Bushrod comes back, move Leno over to RT and put Long back at RG.

So in order for Acho to play ILB he needs to have good lateral movement and be able to make reads on the left and right. What is being seen on tape that leads one to not believe he can do both?

Also on Willie he weighs 251 lbs to McPHee's 275. So presumably McPhee will always be rushing the passer and the other OLB will either be the blitzer or go into coverage. We know Willie has good vertical speed for his size not sure about his lateral speed.

So even though it seems unlikely we could see an LB lineup of Young Acho Shea McPhee if Young and Acho do have good lateral speed and can learn to make all the reads for their positions the it is still possible this could work.

That isn't going to happen. Long has been fantastic at RT and Leno was atrocious there. He's much better at LT.

One thing I love about this team is how young our starters are. Yes, we're not great right now, but the way we're playing gives me a lot of hope for the next few years.

-Charles Leno-24 years old
-Hroniss Grasu-24
-Sam Acho-27
-Jeremy Langford -23
-Kadeem Carey-22
-Demontre Hurst -24
-Marquess Wilson - 23
-Harold Jones-Quartey -22
-Eddie Goldman -21
-Shea -26
-Christian Jones-24
-Laroy Reynolds -24
-Adrian Amos-22
-Jarvis Jenkins -27
-Pernell McPhee-26
-Ego Ferguson-24
-Kyle Fuller-23
-Will Sutton-24
-Kyle Long-26
-Alshon Jeffery-25

These are all guys that could be impacting the team for the next decade. I'm excited to see what Fox/Fangio/Gase can do with them.

Agreed Long is borderline dominant at RT. He struggled a couple times with Houston, but considering he was a 22 sack all pro last season I was impressed.

I would play Bushrod if he is healthy, at least you know that he won't have a meltdown game.

But Leno has shown that he should be developed.

My hope is that Young and Acho could share snaps and be one complete player.

Acho handling run and coverage responsibilities and Young coming into rush the passer.

At 3 million a season you can afford to have Young as a rotational player.

Said the same about Leno, Grasu not getting pushed around and the Jay's fumble though I still wish he had better security in general. I could have been wrong as I'm not rewatching. Nice to see those things are real and the rest is so very welcome. Wonder what was up with Bennett?

Leno's biggest value to the team is what he is doing now as a backup. He has shown he is decent at pass blocking but not strong enough to be at least be average at run blocking. Keep him as a backup maybe he can expand his game over time. Oline depth is not easy to get because there are just not enough good ones in the NFL.
