And last week the defense gave up Zero total Tds until the last minute or two of the game. Both the Detroit and Minnesota games should have been won and were totally there for the taking. I have two problems with this team right now, and they are how we are finishing these games and special teams. The special teams part of it is obvious, and we are spoiled from a history of having great special teams until a few years ago.
In our last two games in particular, in the last few minutes or defense falls apart, and the offense can't get a first down. If we could do either of those two things, we are
4-3 right now instead of 2-5.
You must be able to see the massive improvement in our defense.
The problem with special teams is that we've got guys who should be backups starting which means that our backups are guys who shouldn't be in the league. The guys who shouldn't be in the league are the players on special teams. It's just a symptom of the biggest problem with the team which is a lack of talent.
Pace is also erring on the side of young, developmental players when it comes to the roster. During the Angelovie era, one LB spot would go to a core special teamer, the last two WR spots would go to core special teamers, one RB spot would go to a core special teamer, etc. If they had to choose between a young, developing player or a vet who was good on special teams, they always went with the vet. It made our special teams really good, but they also developed no late round (or UDFA) talent for the last five years they were around.
