This just depressed the shit out of me as Aaron Donald has been watching this while eating Bear shaped animal crackers all week.

Other than that great post!

People complain about Nagy not running the ball more and now you see why he doesn’t.

Daniels in his first one looked to have slipped on the wet field so I can give him a pass on that one.
A lot of not knowing your assignment plays. Which is just bad preparation.
A lot of jumping to a spot rather than any attempt to read the target/situation.
And a lot of shitty hand fighting.

On Leno being beat by speed rush, Massie gets spun right by left flat-footed.

Hiestand doesn't seem to be getting the job done with these guys.

This is why we need Mitch to play, a mobile QB covers oline flaws.

Thanks for posting this. Two things:

First, it goes to show how PFF rankings are just as arbitrary as anyone else's "rankings". The Bears OL is the weakest unit on the team, yet PFF had them as one of the best in the NFL. And its not really a case of "the devil you know" or only looking at Chicago's OL in detail and not other teams...statistically, the Bears offense succeeds in spite of its bad OL. They are near the bottom of the NFL with 4.1 YPC (even including Trubisky's scrambles of 7.1) and are in the middle of the pack in sack%.

Second, and this is probably an unpopular thought, but the Bears' best OL is still probably Leno, and he's not very good. For all the praise heaped on Ryan Pace's selection of Cody Whitehair, he is really 'just a guy' and is somewhat of a liability with his questionable shotgun snaps and tendency to blow assignments. Using a 2nd round pick on a below-average (IMO) center isn't good ROI. The Bears need Whitehair to improve greatly over the next few weeks.

****, that was even worse than I thought. No worries though, because we can pick up a new and much better OL in the fourth and fifth rounds next year.

I thought the reason we brought in Harry Hiestand was to fix this?

Also, has the line been this bad all season or just since Long went down?

Mitch has been saving this awful OL all year. Every OL gets beat at times but ever since Long's been out this OL has been really bad. Giants were a bad game for them. Cody is usually much better at picking up guys and combo blocks than he was this game but it could have something to do with other missed assignments surprising him.. Daniels will be fine with an off season of work and strength training. Leno never stones people but usually manages the slow walk back which is good enough most of the time. Witzmann is useless. This game was a reality check for the entire team.

I said it a couple weeks ago. Posters have been all over the Houston OL because of the sacks Watson takes (also makes big plays) due to holding the ball for over 3 sec. but our current line worse.
Our O will not be able to keep up with the Rams unless we keep Goff in the pocket. Mitch might be able to find outside space on his own. Goff gets it by design. Good news is we should have a pretty fast track for Soldier Field for this time of year.

Would the line be better if Cdub and Daniel's switched positions? Cdub was doing ok snap wise until the Giants game but a few bad snaps, it was drizzling through most of the game but no excuse.

'Switching positions'....I forgot how much the Bears used this strategy despite never being successful with it.

I thought Daniel's 1st position at University was center.

Daniels spent the majority of his career in college at center. Whitehair played guard and finished as a LT at Kansas State. It’s something I think the Bears look at in the off-season.

He's missing assignments now. Anyone who thinks that would be better at center is fooling themselves.

The three highest rated rookie online are Daniels, Mcglinchey, and Quenton Nelson. The common denominator is Hiestand has worked with them. Just like anything else in football it takes time.
Edit: turns out it wasn’t top 3 it was 3 of the top 5 which is still very impressive. Yes it’s PFF but still it’s got to count for something.

Can we stfu about running the ball now? Maybe we should consider that our coach knows how freaking awful this o line is right now and running the ball isn’t going to work.

Thayer has been on record saying from game 1 Daniels has had difficulty making the correct reads for his blocking assignment, why he didn't start right away.
