Yeah, neither of them have anything to do with fantasy hockey. For TSN he's created his own methodology based on individuals stats and how it relates to the team with the sole purpose of determining how a team would fair in a 7-game series on neutral ice.

"The premise, then, of my NHL Power Rankings is to determine the team that would be favored to win a seven-game series on neutral ice. The theoretical premise is based on neutral ice because home-ice advantage is a circumstance of play, not a measure of a team's actual quality."

He uses individual analysis of each player on the team to generate a overall power ranking of that team through basically an algorithm.

And ESPN, well, they are just ESPN. So they throw whatever they want up there to see what sticks. Usually which ever teams will give them the most hits, hah.

Top 5 across the board I can agree with, but i'm bias too! haha. I didn't even know fox covered hockey, haha. I thought surely VS. or NBC would have one considering they hold the TV contract, but I couldn't find one.

I did see that Luongo is out for tomorrow though.

Its early. If the Hawks ended the season #1 in the power rankinigs then i'd be concerned. Keeping in mind that the President's Trophy is usually the kiss of death.

Not necessarily 5minutes, I feel like that is a common misconception. In the last 10 years, 30% of the Presidents Trophy winners have won the Cup -- I'm pretty sure those odds beat any others.

Not only that, but most of those years a Presidents Trophy winner has been involved in the Finals. I think if you are the #1 at the end of the season, you are giving yourself the best chance to make it to the Finals and potentially win.

Yeah? And? It has nothing to do with fantasy. Again, read his methodology.

For YEARS now he has stated that it is expressly for the purpose of fantasy sports posturing. I have no idea why that is gone from what you read. Why would it make any sense for that information to be hosted in the Fantasy "file"? It isn't an oversight Mass. They have pretty smart people running the IT at ESPN/TSN.

Agreed, and its still VERY early to be talking like that but with our talent, past few seasons and current standing I guess its warranted. Really just for the pride and status of having the most points I'd love it, I really don't think it would phase a team like ours, we have the best leaders in the NHL and a stupid trophy wouldn't be the thing to doom us if we did get ousted.

Posting power ranking may be informative and useful for fantasy players but fantasy players/leagues have no bearing on who is the so called best team. Don't you think Pitt and Chicago would be ranked high even if there were no such thing as fantasy hockey?

since 1990 only 21% of the Presidents Trophy winners have won the cup. Considering that if you win that trophy you are basically expected to win the cup, 21% ain't that nice.

I don't know if I agree with that. I'd like to see the stats on all odds (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th in the NHL, etc.. etc..) I bet that 21% is the best odds you're going to get.

Again, read the methodology, it has nothing to do with providing information for fantasy. He uses an algorithm based on individual performance to generate these rankings, but it has no purpose in the world of fantasy sports. It would make sense to be hosted there because much like fantasy sports, these power rankings are meaningless.

Which is also the same reason why the methodology for the rankings is not hosted on the fantasy site but on his blog. It's meaningless.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
Well, I look at power rankings as a running theory in progess. It basically compares who are the teams to beat at this particular moment compared against seasonal trends. They have little bearing on the *actual* game except for fans trying to predict which team has a chance of beating which team on a specific night, and for the fantasy sports geeks.

They're amusicn and sometimes insightful reads, but mean very little except fodder for discussion (not always a bad thing).

Here it is: Based on overall finish in NHL Standings since 1990 (not conference)

1st = 24%

2nd = 10%

3rd = 19%

4th = 10%

5th = 10%

6th = 10%

7th = 5%

8th = 10%

9th = 0%

10th = 5%
