I never got to play a single free game until Pick up. Plus Goalie Equipment is 3x the cost of anyone elses equipment.

This is the first year where I have not had to pay to play.

exactly. I've played pickup for free because I'm a goalie, but never league play.

. My pads have been due for replacement for years, but a new pair of pads is the same price as almost all of the equipment a forward uses.

and that's for clearance pads....

It's hit and miss here. When the two teams I played for offered to pick up my share, I wasn't going to say no.

Still pay my share for tournaments. Helps keep it a little cheaper for the others.

bull shit pez. There are more openings on the farm level and overseas for forwards and blueliners (which can be used as gateways to the NHL) than there are for goalies. Lets change this...there are better odds to make it in professional paid hockey for a forward or blueliner than there are for goalies. And if you don't believe me I have about 6 ex goalie friends who couldn't get anywhere based on their high talent level compared to 12 or so friends who played forward or blueliner who had average skill levels yet who made it to some pro level hockey. They didn't last long there however because their skills were average but at least they got the shot.

Here in IL, for youth hockey, goalies ALWAYS got a break on the bill on the teams I played on. And that was travel hockey. I'm betting house league is even worse, since it's hard to find an established house league goalie. It is to offset the equipment costs, no doubt, but it's also a result of a lot of younger kids not wanting to play goalie.

My pads are so damn old, and they barely even fit me anymore hahaha. I should be wearing more than 34's

well, that's Illinios then, because there is no such luck with that in Canada.

Yes, but isn't hockey much cheaper in Canada as far as leagues are concerned? Might have something to do with it.

Last time I played travel hockey was ...1996. Back then, my parents shelled out like $2500 for a spring/fall year of hockey. JUST for team fees. That doesn't include extra costs for tournaments or anything either. I know AAA was even more than that which is why I never played it. CYA, Team Illinois, and others were up near the $10k a year mark....

P.S. We should split this off into it's own thread. Cost of Playing Hockey or something.

This must really be an american thing then lol. Probably why there haven't been many hall of fame American goalies. No one down south wants to play the position? Or is it because Americans like to shoot and not be shot at?

You are sooo late to the party this week. You sure you aren't the one on narcotics? That was so this morning.

Doh!
