As advertised, JT Toppin next. 6'8 225 PF from Texas Tech. Not related to Obi and Jacob Toppin, but shares a lot of the same attributes. Draftnet comp: Larry Nance Jr. Projected anywhere from the mid 1st to early 2nd depending on where you look

Strengths: Super high motor, long wingspan at 7', excellent rebounder, good quickness, can defend the perimeter, athletic
Weaknesses: Raw offensive game, inconsistent shooting, maybe has a defensive IQ issue (from what I am reading it seems like his blocks are a result of just motor and athletic ability rather than high IQ weak side help)

Pros for Bulls: defensive minded player with high motor, could be useful as an energy/cleanup guy in the near future. Doesn't need the ball to be effective. Would likely be a fan favorite because Chicago loves blue collar type players. Probably fits as a small ball center since he's quick and can play bigger than his height
Cons: Lack of outside game, probably couldn't be that hub player at the top of the key that Billy likes to use his bigs as. Is the defensive IQ thing gonna make him like a Tyrus Thomas in the league?

As with most of these, I have not actually watched him play, so some of my concerns may be invalid
I don't think Tyrus had much of a basketball IQ. He was like a football gadget guy.

(in hindsight)

Tyrus didn't have much basketball IQ at all. Definitely had the tools to be more than he was, but alas
I just don't care to look it up, but who were his coaches with the Bulls? If it was Skiles-VDN-Thibs, then I can see how those bookends might hurt a guy like him. Add in the bowling alley attendant in the middle, and you had nothing for the first few years of your career.

Tyrus didn't get coached by Thibs, so just Skiles and VDN. Coaching definitely didn't do him any favors

Can you imagine being as raw as he was and your first coach is Scott Skiles, the guy who is known for just up and leaving because he gets so frustrated with coaching, only to go next to a guy who was clearly in over his head in Vinny?

i always actually liked VDN

That series against Boston will always be the best series of basketball ive ever seen, despite losing the series

Arguably, VDN was better for him because he actually played him lol

That's because, much like Fred Hoiberg later, VDN only had an interest in offensive basketball. He could have given a shit about defense.
And Tyrus still almost averaged 2 bpg in that system. What could've been...

Eh, Salmons career up to that point showed steady improvement in numbers. His numbers with Sacramento in 08-09 were damn near identical to what he did with the Bulls. GarPax just bought and sold at the right time.

A pretty good flip from GarPax honestly. Salmons did do well here, kinda fizzled out the next year (though resurgence post trade to Milwaukee). I remember all the commentators could talk about was how the Bulls were on a 50 win pace post deadline after adding Salmons and Brad Miller. That definitely didn't manifest the next year lol

Had to give up legendary Chicago Bull Andres Nocioni though...

you left off the year before in 2007-2008 when he only shot 32.5% from 3. his 3 point shot was never very good until that 2008-2009 season(a lot of that being with sacramento)

can certainly say the bulls bought at the right time, but his growth at least wasnt stunted by VDN lol

Maluach would have been awesome. But I think they played themselves out of him. Fears or Queen seem fine.

A play I remember that I think signifies Tyrus was in the Boston series where Tyrus got the inbound pass and instead of passing to Rose who was standing there calling for the ball, he proceeds to recklessly dribble up court and force a shot (I think he was bailed out with a foul).
