What a horrific offseason. The fact that we're even talking about Darko Milicic and comparing his 'value' to Omer Asik proves that our FO is in a horrible spot right now. I understand it's hard to gauge the squad with Rose slated to miss a large majority of the season, but Jesus Christ, they had plenty of opportunities to make this team better. But here we are near the end of July and I'm forced to tell myself
our best move has been drafting Marquis Teague.
Just shoot me now.
If we get Darko for the vet min which could make them not match Asik's offer, I'd argue that would be the best move we've made all off-season.
In terms of improving the team this off-season, what could we have realistically done? We didn't have the money to sign GOOD free agents. The older guys that took pay cuts, took pay cuts with championship contenders. The Bulls won't be competing for the title next season with all the question marks we have, and those guys want to win NOW. We don't have the trade assets that would work financially for most teams AND bring us back talent that we'd want. Sure, we could have shopped Deng and Noah to see what we could get for them... but it would probably make more sense to do that at the trade deadline or after next season when they have less years on their contracts and will be easier to trade.
Unrealistic idea: I think we should call up ORL, offer Deng and Noah for Howard + Turkoglu. Best case scenario is that Howard likes it in Chicago and signs an extension. Worst case is he leaves after the season, BUT we clear a **** ton of cap space... especially if we then amnesty Boozer next season. Shit, we'd be like 25 million under the cap at that point.
I personally don't know what the Bulls plan is either.. but I don't think they could have done much this off-season.
