One thing we saw in the Celtics series was they got a lot of second chances. With Noah now matching his elite offensive rebounding on the defensive end, and Deng back, we're hugely improved in that area so far.

I wouldn't put it all down to interior defense though. Compared to last year Rose is playing fewer minutes, Hughes and Noc are off the team, Salmons is on the team and Kirk & Deng are healthy. That's a much improved perimeter defensive mix too.

I included that with it. Defensive bigs are normally good shot blockers and rebounders. They aren't one dimensional shot blockers like Tyrus. Its usaully guys like TC,Camby, Howard, TD, Dalemburt, Ben Wallace, Biendris type deals, they go pretty hand in hand.

Look at a guy like BG. We all agree he is about average on defense. Playing with Wallace and TC he was part of really good defenses, playing with noah, he was part of a bad defense. Having a good defensive big isn't the only part of a good d but its the most important aspect to a good defense. Noah and TT may have come along by the end of the year but they were brutal to begin it. I am very happy though that Noah has come in this year in shape, improved and focus, when he didn't do that before it really made me question if he was going to be anything more than TT.

The defense on the wing and in the interior stunk all last year, including the playoffs.

The backcourt's defense has improved over last year also. Every one is doing better on that side of the ball. The backcourt has to improve offensively...that is the problem.

I would say that Derrick Rose/John Salmons/Kirk Hinrich are all the same defensively as last year for the most part. The big difference has been having Luol Deng out there for perimeter defense.

i strongly disagree about our guards defense being the same as last year...Rose specifically.

Rose's defense last year flat out killed the team on many nights. It just hasnt happened yet this season. Rose is doing a GREAT job of just reacting defensively, and not thinking. There's no more guessing on his behalf out there...he only acts, and the fact that he has the physical abilities to make up for most mistakes he'll make defensively makes it perfect for him to just "react" and not to think.

The team in general is just playing 200 feistier than they were last season. Kirk Hinrich is the leader of the feistiness.

I think you can put a lot of it down to the scheme too. I've posted before about how Scott Skiles seems to be worth about 5 points/100 possessions on the defensive end. After Skiles left we've had a couple of rookie coaches who didn't prioritise defense. Now VDN makes an effort to emphasise defense during the off season and we're a top 5 defensive team again. That's a bit too coincidental to put it all down to the players. The coaches deserve some credit (and blame for the past couple of years!)

Coaching certainly matters but you can't play the same concept with the noah or gooden that started last year that you could with bw or tc.

When Rose gets healthy, I think we will break out. Our Bulls are playing with the intensity level displayed all throughout the Celtics series last season. Salmons had a very good game tonight & I think is starting to come around now. Kirk hit some big shots, finally, & had a solid defensive 2nd half. Deng has played with a fire & tenacity I've never seen him with before. His work on the offensive glass has been key this year, as well as his excellent perimeter defense.

And then there's Noah. What more can I say about this kid? 21pts, 16rebs, 4blks, 3asts. I've loved this kid since we got him & have been overjoyed at his performance thus far. 11.3ppg, 11rpg, 2.3bpg, 61% from the field all in 30mpg. We have not had a double-double player since the 2000-01 season & we promptly traded him the following season for a toothpick to go with the tub of goo we drafted. Jo has made the biggest difference on this team this year. His interior defense, matched with another solid interior defender in surprising rookie Taj Gibson, has helped catapult us into a top 10 defensive team.

Once the scoring catches up to the defense, everything should be coming up roses.

This is one of the funniest lines I've seen on this site. Sadly it's true....
