Buying a new gun, home defense

so I was thinking about buying a new gun for home defense (well, actually more like yard defense)

I spend a lot of time in the spring/summer months out in the yard/garden and sometimes there are some alley burglars who try and take shit from your garage in the middle of the day on weekdays. I was thinking of getting a new gun for yard defense, something compact but that I can open carry that won't make me look too douchey. any good ideas?

Most ranges have rental guns that you can try. Pick out several and it's still the price of renting one. I like Ruger but there a lot of good ones out there.

So i finally decided i'll just use one of my current firearms (probably my judge) if i need that kind of firepower. I'm also gonna pick up a machete from menards and get a laser scope for it. thanks for the help guys!!!
