Too bad the Bears have a player with the highest cap hit in the NFL on the team.

First of all, the Bears can snap their fingers and they won't have a player with the highest cap hit in the NFL anymore.

Secondly, where the hell you spending all this money saved from Cutler's cap hit or restructuring? Maybe they could have spent more of it a few days ago if they didn't have Cutler's contract....but that would have just created another position to fill, and the most important one.

They can, but then that creates a burden on future caps by spreading out the cap hit.

Second, they could have signed Ward, Byrd, Verner, or someone else to shore up the secondary along with Houston. With a QB whisperer as HC, I'm still perplexed why the Bears QB has to carry the highest cap hit in the NFL.

But that is just it, he doesn't HAVE to carry the highest cap hit, the Bears are choosing to make it that way, like mentioned above, they could snap their fingers and change that fact anytime they wish. Jay isn't the highest paid QB in the league.

Isn't that poor cap management on the Bears part though.

Just saying that while the cap hit goes down significantly next year and in 2016, its still an odd decision with needing potentially 9 new starters (outside of Jennings, Briggs) on defense in 2014, the Bears choose this year to take the cap hit.

The converting to a signing bonus, doesn't that reek some havoc on the cap in 2015, 2016 as well?

Wait is your issue the cap number this year or the future years? Because you can't argue both sides. You can't be mad at the cap hit this year and then be mad if it was spread out more (which it would be if the cap hit wasn't as high this year).

Also, if they signed Cutler and he had a fair market value cap hit....it would still be about 16Mil. That 6Mil wouldn't be enough to sign Byrd or Verner, and the only reason why it is high enough for Ward is because he took under market value to go to Denver.

My guess is that this is in preparation for extending our WR's next year and to have some ammunition in next years free agency frenzy. We were not going to fill every need on defense through this years free agency. I think, not positive, i read Cutty's cap number next year is 16 million and add to it the removal of Peppers dead money hit this year and you have an added 15 million in space next year.

Would I like them to convert to a signing bonus now, yeah, but that'll cause havoc on the cap next year when Jeffery and Marshall will be needing extensions, and a defense that will continue to need retooling, they're damned now if they don't, but they'll be damned later if they do.

It's easy for me and others to want to create money now (they have to with only $2.5M in space now), but creating cap space by restructuring pushes the cap hit further down the line and hinders their free agency plans going forward.

I guess in short, to not devolve into another Cutler thread (I started the devolution) I think the QB position on the Bears didn't require a large salary. Emery and apparently Trestman disagree with that. We'll see whose right in the end, but I'm afraid I will be.

Don't worry guys, the Bears can always cut Rosario again to create some cap relief if needed.

Maybe i will start another thread on this possibility.

It is brilliant by Emery and Stein. Take the cap hit this year and we will be in great shape going forward. We have big contracts left to sign with Marshall and Jeffery. If we don't do it this way it would put us in a tight situation going forward. Smart way to do it.

2.6 Mil can't be right. These are the Bears top 4 FA signings so far.

Mundy 1.5
Young 1.62
Houston 5.04
Williams 1.5

That's a 9.66 cap hit, Peppers created 9.81 Mil by getting cut. The other signings (Hixon, Jennings, Senn), all count for less than 1Mil. Even if you round up to 3Mil, Bush saved the team almost 1/2 of that. So, basically saying the Bears went into free agency with 4Mil, which is not accurate.
