Comparing players defensively is pointless. Different stats could be used from either person and the eye test is always different between two people. People turn facts into their own opinions.

Castro is a good player who has gotten a lot better defensively and is still a raw talent. He's going to get a lot better and probably be one of the best if not the best SS in the league any given year. Who really cares if he's better than Ramirez? The White Sox have a better record. Who gives a ****?

I love people with short term memory issues. The defense of Ramirez and Castro was actually brought up by the one who is now saying "who gives a ****" Note* See quote below. The end.

That's true. But whoever it was that mentioned that Castro was a better fielder than Ramirez is a little crazy. Castro has been much much better this year, but Ramirez is still one of the most underrated SS in the league.

Well said TCF. Trying to debate who is better on defense is just going to turn into a bunch of pointless chest pounding at this point. I am glad we have Starlin Castro, and I think the possibility of him moving into an elite category of players is well within the realm of possible.

Yeah. Sox fans are going to say that Ramirez is better and the Cubs fans are going to say Castro is better. They're too close and there isn't a great way to really tell. No way to move past bias because there aren't great stats either way.

The best thing to do is just to decide that they are both good defensively and move on. I personally think that Castro is going to be one hell of a player just because he is so young and already doing impressive things in the major leagues. Raw talent and still a .300 hitter. That's pretty damn impressive.

Because I changed my mind. That happens. I'm not stubborn.

I disagree with the person who said that Castro was better because I personally don't believe that. But why does it matter? They play 6 games a year against each other and it's not like Sox/Cubs players and their talent level really means anything.

it was brought up in the dempster thread when USC decided to say that ramirez couldnt play SS on a trade to the cubs because castro is there (mind you castro will probably move to 2b at some point) but anyway, and ramirez couldnt play 2b for the cubs because of his 2008 UZR. this is where it stems from. I didnt bring this up, USC did. it has nothing to do with cubs/sox........any baseball fan with a brain knows ramirez is better at D.

It's not a guarantee that Castro will have to move off SS, especially if he continues to improve. That is more a function of how well a guy like Javier Baez continues to play at SS, for example.

He hit over .300 last year.

The biggest concern for Castro is the small difference between his AVG and OBP.

he is a good player no doubt, and like I said earlier he has his age and experience on his side. But people putting him in the elite category in a projection do have a chance to get kicked in the nuts if that doesnt happen as no one knows.

I think Castro will stay at SS. Don't see anyone else in the Cubs system playing SS and he's already become better each year defensively. I think he'll be a pretty good SS.

He's a good hitter for AVG and already has pretty impressive power. The biggest problem is plate discipline and that can be fixed. I'm not going to predict him to be the best SS of all time or anything, but I think he has the potential to be one of the best SS's in the league in a given year. That's potential. Not a prediction.
