As someone who has quit and started more times than I'd like to admit or care to remember I hope that I can offer some useful advice. First, as everyone said, you have to really want to quit. If you don't, then don't waste your time and money on any pills, patches, counseling or anything else. Second, I know several people who have been successful on Chantix. Go to your physician and tell them you want to quit. Get their advice on Chantix not some boards. Chantix was not successful for me and I did not have any side affects, either. Wellbutrin in addition to nicotine patches worked for me. After the Wellbuterin I stayed, and continue to stay, with patches in certain situations. If I know a major "trigger" is coming, such as more than a drink or two, I put on a 14mg patch. I also carry nicotine mints but rarely use them except on the golf course.
It is very important that you have a good relationship with your physician. I had one that said, "Just put them down" and, guess what, it didn't fucking work. My present physician was willing to try anything to get me to quit. He was understanding and we kept throwing shit at the wall until something stuck. Second, your family has to be on board and in the first few weeks have to understand that they indeed are walking on eggshells when they around you. They have to deal with your mood swings or irritability.
Its a rough road that many don't or won't understand. You'll fail-a lot. But keep jumping back on the bus when you fall off. Good luck.
