As someone who has quit and started more times than I'd like to admit or care to remember I hope that I can offer some useful advice. First, as everyone said, you have to really want to quit. If you don't, then don't waste your time and money on any pills, patches, counseling or anything else. Second, I know several people who have been successful on Chantix. Go to your physician and tell them you want to quit. Get their advice on Chantix not some boards. Chantix was not successful for me and I did not have any side affects, either. Wellbutrin in addition to nicotine patches worked for me. After the Wellbuterin I stayed, and continue to stay, with patches in certain situations. If I know a major "trigger" is coming, such as more than a drink or two, I put on a 14mg patch. I also carry nicotine mints but rarely use them except on the golf course.

It is very important that you have a good relationship with your physician. I had one that said, "Just put them down" and, guess what, it didn't fucking work. My present physician was willing to try anything to get me to quit. He was understanding and we kept throwing shit at the wall until something stuck. Second, your family has to be on board and in the first few weeks have to understand that they indeed are walking on eggshells when they around you. They have to deal with your mood swings or irritability.

Its a rough road that many don't or won't understand. You'll fail-a lot. But keep jumping back on the bus when you fall off. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I did see my doctor today and he recommended Chantix and wrote me a prescription. I also found out the emphysema is very minor.
At least I'm not in a huge rush to try to quit now right before the holidays. I also want to look into the Zyban Wino mentioned. I believe that's what I used to quit many years ago and it worked great.

I found out yesterday that I have emphysema. I was thinking of trying Chantix to quit smoking. Has anyone tried it or something similar to quit?

Tater

I stopped smoking using Chantix. I was a 2 pack a day guy and my wife had been on me to quit. I had tried every patch, wellbutrin. hypnosis..you name it. I promised my wife I would give it a try as soon as I got back from a job in Nevada. I really had no intention of quitting. Some people become depressed on Chanti and can't take it. What I found was that after abouit 20 minutes of taking it in the morning I would get a wave of nausea. If I was lucky it would pass and a real serene feeling would take over. The few times it didn't I puked my guts out..lol Taking it in the evening never bothered me. You continue to smoke the first week that you take it and I noticed about 6 days in that smoking no longer gave me any satisfaction. None ...zip. The Cantix activates whatever it is in the brain that gives a person the satisfaction from a cig.

I stopped then and continued to take them as prescribed. I cheated now and then but really didn't get anything out of it. Once I reached the third month of taking it I dropped it down to 1 a day for weeks and then started cutting them in half. So I actually made them last somewhere between 5 and 6 months.

It has been 6 years now. Emphysema runs in my family and is the reason for both my grandfathers and fathers death.

In retrospect, as long as Chantix does not make you depressed it absolutely does work.

My girlfriend was on it, and attacked me. Now I am in DV training going on 18 months still in the nightmare. Be aware that people that take chanitx are unaware they are becoming total ass holes. Whatever you do do not mix with alcohol, and probably adderol as it exacerbates the thinking that you are right.

I think Chantix should be illegal. You could google "Chantix ruined my life" and find some forums with people explaining better the weird aggressive attitude I am talking about. Lawsuits. It has been involved in at least one controversial murder.

I wouldn't take it and I don't really want to be anywhere near anybody that does.

didn't you end up in jail for domestic violence?

I don't mean to discount others' experiences but no matter how much I have a personal desire to quit, a couple days later I think one more cig won't hurt, and the cycle begins again.

Thanks a bunch for this TBD. Great info.

I tried it several years ago, but it was with a cheapo set up I bought from China. It never seemed to work that good and was kind of expensive.

i used the cheap stuff just to try it out and found a decent setup..i still use it.. ego t 1100 mah with kanger t3s tanks..

i ended up getting a deal for 5 ego t battery bases for 25 bucks off ebay, so i always have a fresh battery ready to go... those t3s tanks are a few bucks... just keep on top of their coils which are about a buck a piece.. once the coil starts failing.. wont burn good, will start to taste like shit and will leak a tad... but with optimal coils (1.8 ohms) and a full charge .. the thing hits well enough on 24 mg juice.. a coil lasts me 1-2 weeks... my bill runs me about 100 aud for 3 months... compared to 75-100 per week for reg smokes here..

but if you need to quit for health related reasons.. i think id stick with those pills... who knows what vape will do long term itself.. i dont...

That means you don't have a strong personal desire to quit.

I've been a smoker for 12 years. I'm now on my 5th day of quitting, I know it's not much but so far so good. I'm using the nicoderm step 1 patch at 21mg per 24 hours.

So far, I don't know if it's withdrawal or what but I've been getting that feeling of dread, almost like my stomach is dropping lol, when I think about how I can't smoke. For me, it's very much the routine. My mind is still dead set on a cigarette after I eat, and I have to walk myself back. I have a two year old son and I need to be able to be active with him, that's what keeps me going and so far I've felt good about it.

My only worry is booze, I've chosen to stay away from my friends (all alcoholics, basically) because I don't trust myself to drink. I'm fucked for sure if I drink in excess.

Stick to it, and think about your son every time you get the urge for a smoke.

Yup, I sure do. It's easier at home with videogames and TV, at work if its slow it isn't so easy.

The truth of the matter is that you have to want to quit. Not just say you want to quit but deep down in the subcockle region seriously have to want to quit.

And then you have to stop buying cigarettes. The rest kind of works itself out from there.

I would use the patch and the gum before I used chantix. I have heard fucked up stories about people having serious crazy issues with chantix.

I've been looking into Zyban, and wonder why you don't hear much about it anymore. My doctor didn't even mention it. From what I've read, it doesn't seem like the side effects are as bad as Chantix.

I am serious about the patches I have a buddy that cannot quit smoking, he puts on a patch first thing in the AM and is cool as a cucumber.

No longer available under that brand name. It is the same thing as generic buproprion.

Thanks. Maybe I'll try those first. Does insurance cover patches?

Hmmm. I wonder why that changed? Is it still a prescription?
