LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte and wide receiver Eddie Royal missed practice on Thursday, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said inside linebacker Shea McClellin is “50-50” to play Monday night in San Diego.
“I watched him today out there. He got some action. I think it’s 50-50,” Fangio said.
McClellin (limited) has been out since he injured his knee in the Bears’ win at Kansas City on Oct. 11. The converted defensive end/outside linebacker seemed to embrace his new position (inside linebacker) before the injury. McClellin is still one of the Bears’ leading tacklers despite missing two games.
“We’ll see. We’ll see how the rest of the week goes,” McClellin said. “It hurt missing out on the gaining experience by playing every week. I felt up until the point I got hurt I was getting better. That is my goal each week: to get better. I think being out of the lineup is tough, but it also helped me to get in my playbook and improve that way.”
Meantime, head coach John Fox declined to share any additional details about Forte’s knee injury. The two-time Pro Bowl tailback was in the locker room after practice but was not made available to the media.
“Yeah, you know and chances [that a guy plays] and timelines … you know I can’t determine that,” Fox said. “It’s truly day-to-day. Matt’s a leader on this football team. He was voted captain on offense. He’s definitely been that guy [a leader] since we’ve been here and I think he’ll continue to do that.”
The Bears spent Thursday preparing rookie Jeremy Langford to start in the backfield on Monday night.
In addition to Forte and Royal, center Hroniss Grasu (neck) and linebacker Pernell McPhee (knee) were sidelined on Thursday.
Wide receiver Cameron Meredith (ankle), left tackle Jermon Bushrod (shoulder), linebacker LaRoy Reynolds (knee) and cornerback Bryce Callahan (concussion/non-contact) were listed as limited.
