Duncan Keith

Before anyone jumps on me, just realize this is all speculation for the sake of conversation. Please react accordingly.

A very unspecific story that has been around the Hawks for a while now is that the locker room isn't a great place to be and it's effecting the on ice play. Nobody has ever provided details, but this "story" persists. Also, with a lengthy losing streak on the books, the talk naturally becomes "what came first- the sour locker room or the losing streak?". Until something of substance comes out in the press, nobody knows.

A lot of the speculation centers around Kane. All the party boy talk is nothing new and hey, he's earned that reputation. (As an aside, it was amusing to see some clamoring for Jeff Carter who's party boy reputation and less desirable attitude has him on his 3rd team in less than a year) But seeing as how nothing or nobody of substance has flat out said Kane is the guy or pointed to specific incidents, lets look elsewhere.

How about Duncan Keith?

  • -Biggest contract on the team (certainly the weakest argument, but with cash comes pressure, no doubt)
  • -A player who flat out said to the press that his heart wasn't in the game last year until facing elimination.
  • -The face, heart and soul of a defensive corps that has been the root of all problems this year.

Toews is clearly the go-to guy of this team, but he has more than performed to expectations by leading Hart Trophy talks at the mid season point. Essentially, he has done his job this year.

The defense however, is another story. They haven't gotten it done and a lot of that has to fall on Keith. When he's good, the team is good and he has had a few flashes of his 2010 style brilliance this year. When he's bad- turnovers, bad decisions- the team suffers big time.

Could he have been pissed about being saddled with Leddy earlier in the year? Possibly.
Could he have been upset about Crawford not bailing him out time and time again? Why not.
Could he be discouraged with the coaching staff's lack of adjustment? A lot of fans seem to be.

All I'm saying is Keith is an enormous part of this team. All eyes are on him as the defensive corps struggles and nobody seems to be helping him out. Does he have a right to be unhappy with the way things have gone down thus far?

Could Keith's unhappiness be the root of the rumored dissent in the Blackhawks locker room? Is he that strong of a personality?

I think your thoughts are definitely worthy of consideration.

Damn I'd hate for an alternate captain to have that type of attitude. At least last season he could hide behind the enormous amount of hockey he played in 2010, but not this season with the absence of Olympics and a 1st round exit.

Ya know, on the subject of Keith, am I not paying enough attention or does it seem that a lot of post game afterthoughts (cliches, mostly) are heading towards Sharp and Kane and rarely Keith?

If he's really have issues like this, that needs to be addressed ASAP. Leaders can't have that mentality.

Good point. You're not hearing or seeing much of Keith. I know this is a stupid point, but he's never being interviewed by Kustok at intermission or showing up anywhere else. He's not being talked to or about in the kind of way you would expect a franchise defenseman to be.

The easy retort would be that he's not playing well so the team is keeping him out of the spotlight, but even that's a little odd. I've seen and heard a lot of the guys answering questions about the losing streak but Keith isn't front and center like you'd expect.

not all players, captains etc are leaders in the sense that it can be seen from the media and fans. Its what goes on behind closed doors.

Its like Paul Konerko, captain of the sox and the most quiet of the bunch. Sure he talks when asked, but its short, and very politically correct.

His play has been a question mark this year, but anything outside of that we just dont know, we arent there, we arent in the locker room.

moved. we have been using 1 thread for player talk (roster) for quite sometime. If we start doing this again where we have threads about one player, joe and many others (joe being the leader of creating threads on players) will start to do it again.

My post was more about a subject (rumored dissent in the locker room) rather than a player but whatever.

That's correct as well in regards to different types of leadership.

I was just posing the question about media going to him. I do think Keith is the quiet type based on his prior interviews and speeches I've seen of his. However, he is a leader of the team and the leader on the defensive corps, which has struggled all year.

There are also rumors out there that a rift lies above the dressing room.

There is probably so much we dont know.

In team sports bad chemistry can lead to bad times, it can influence in a much smaller amount in individual sports such as baseball. So if they have something brewing in the clubhouse, that could lead to some serious issues.

Im still trying to figure out if it is logical to state that Q may have lost this team, being the rift specifically with Q. :dunno:

Instead of downward the chain of command, maybe it's Q and upward.
