Yes, Maine does not come in with bases-loaded. He can't trhwo strikes and really never has. I would have kept Cabrera in or use Russell. That's what I think and I will stick with it all the way.
Scott Maine 10.3 K/9 IP, 2.47 K/BB in the minors. Decent numbers for a RP, and he obviously capable of throwing a lot of strikes and missing a quite a few bats. His MLB career to date has been 9.1 K/9 IP and 1.95 K/BB through 40.1 IP coming into today's game. He has been walking more guys at the MLB level than the minors... but he also still strikes out twice as many batter than he walks.
But, you'd keep Cabrera in there? The guy who came in and walked Kemp on 7 pitches, 3 were sliders in the dirt that nearly went wild. He then managed to get a gift K because Ethier swung at a pitch he shouldn't have, as only the first called K was close. He then walked Ramirez (a guy who walks about as often as Castro and Barney do) on 4 pitches. Yet, you're whining because Sveum brought in Maine... and that Maine can't throw strikes? Cabrera wasn't throwing strikes! But you'd think Sveum is an idiot for pulling Cabrera?
The reason Cabrera isn't a highly touted pen spec is because he can't throw strikes, he's extremely hittable, and he doesn't strike many guys out! We're only talking a 7.6 K/9 IP and 1.93 K/BB type of guy. Oh, and by the way, 4 BB/ 9 IP compared to Maine's 4.2. They both walk guys far too often, but Maine at least has a chance of pitching his way out of it. Cabrera also gives up 2 full more hits per 9 IP than Maine (9.9 for Cabrera and 7.9 for Maine).
